elane352 Posted October 8, 2023 Report Posted October 8, 2023 Greetings, All of a sudden, I can't close my driver side door. I noticed two things: (1) The circular star-like mechanism inside the latch can be spun freely using my fingers. That doesn't seem right since the one on the working passenger side door jamb cannot be spun. (2) My door handle is extremely loose all of a sudden. So I need to address that. I have attached two pictures. I have been searching the forum. I have not hit on anything yet. I probably am not searching well. Suggestions? Eddie Quote
elane352 Posted October 9, 2023 Author Report Posted October 9, 2023 I see that my shop manual indicates that the door latch mechanism is not serviceable and will need to be replaced if it is not operating satisfactory. Quote
Dave72dt Posted October 9, 2023 Report Posted October 9, 2023 Probably a broken spring inside the latch which is likely riveted or spot welded together. You may be able to get it apart and repair it. Not serviceable means it was only available as a complete unit. It's already broke so theoretically you can't hurt it by going deeper. 1 Quote
Tooljunkie Posted October 12, 2023 Report Posted October 12, 2023 my 51 did this just as we were all geared up to go on a road trip. By pulling door shut and locking from the inside it would stay closed. A coiled spring broke, and i managed to repair it with parts from a spare latch. Quote
