FarmerJon Posted June 11, 2023 Report Posted June 11, 2023 Well, it seems I am due for a fresh battery. I currently have a Group size 1, it seems to be a bit small for the tray. I don't have a proper hold down, so will match one to the new battery. What modern lead acid 6 volt battery is closest in size to the original? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted June 11, 2023 Report Posted June 11, 2023 Group 2. Larger, still fits in the battery tray. More cranking power. Bought mine a NAPA. Traded in my Group 1. 1 Quote
desoto1939 Posted June 11, 2023 Report Posted June 11, 2023 Also purchase a battery extender charger to keep the battery at full charge when the car is inthe garage. This will also extend the life of the battery. I get on average 4-6 years out of a 6 volt battery for my 1939 Desoto by having it on the extender battery charger. Rich Hartung Quote
DonaldSmith Posted June 12, 2023 Report Posted June 12, 2023 Amen to the charger. I looked at my maintenance records and was shocked to see how often I had to get a new battery. Winters in the garage are not good, without a maintenance charger. Some guys even take he battery inside for the winter. Quote

I would also place the battery on a piece of wood and pull the caps and checkthe water level when being stored and also use distilled water. Rich Hartung Quote
