vacuum gauge timing

now that I've got the engine running pretty good since I can't read the timing marks on frt. pulley with using a vacuum gauge to get the highest vacuum reading where should I pickup my vacuum signal? will this work for setting idle mixture too?

You need manifold vacuum.  Usually available below the carb.  If you have vacuum wipers that's a good place.
