Speedometer /gauge cluster gasket??

Recommended Posts

1948 Canadian Dodge (plodge) D25 , I have the dash unit reinstalled & secured in place now to insert speedo/gauge unit & secure it.
Looks like it is held in place by the choke & throttle cable assemblies on either side at the bottom of unit & the beam indicator at the top.
My question is - is there supposed to be a gasket that fits between the speedometer unit & dash proper or is it meant to be more or less suspended in that dash opening to avoid metal to metal contact eliminating unavoidable “rattling “  going down the road ?
 Thank you ?

No gasket I've ever seen. The cluster itself does have gaskets inside it.

Thank you for your reply Young Ed, appreciate it.
Yes I do see the gasket within the cluster unit frame and as I look at how the speedometer/gauge unit sits in the dash opening it would be very difficult to set & keep a gasket in place ….. almost as impossible as it is to contort yourself into a pretzel up & behind the dash & fasten it in place and connect all the wiring ??

Yup when I rewired mine I pulled the whole dash! It needed painting anyways but it was certainly easier to make all those connections on the bench

I found that trying to tighten the indicator cap nut to be very difficult, I finally took and drilled a hole through the cap nut and used a nail like a t-bar to tighten it. That cap nut needs to be good and tight because it is all that holds the upper part in.

I hear you Brother!!! That is a great idea.
I was a little shy of horseing on it to hard , the threads on that beam indicator are not that substantial…. I have great respect for all those that have been down this road ??
