Paulo Windsor Posted October 27, 2022 Report Posted October 27, 2022 Hello from Portugal. After rebuild my 47 Windsor engine I am assembling it and i need to adjust valve clearence. On the shop manual says to put 008 inlet and 012 exaust with the engine hot. With the engine cold can i put the same or what measure do i put? Thanks Quote
Doug&Deb Posted October 27, 2022 Report Posted October 27, 2022 I would put .014 clearance on both cold. This will allow the engine to run until fully warmed up . Then adjust the valves according to the service manual. 2 Quote
Paulo Windsor Posted October 28, 2022 Author Report Posted October 28, 2022 Thanks Doug. I have no conditions to check valve clearence after put it in place thats why i ask for opinions. I plan to running in with valves already done to work with no problems. Sorry about my english. Thanks again 1 Quote
Doug&Deb Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 The inner fender has a removable panel that allows access to the valves. Be sure to wear heavy gloves to protect your hands from the heat. Quote
Bryan G Posted October 29, 2022 Report Posted October 29, 2022 Err on the side of being too loose, not too tight. I would get them close to right cold, then once you have the engine up and running and everything sorted out, adjust them again hot. I was nervous about that job but it isn't really that bad and it goes fairly quick. After I had adjusted all mine hot I still had some very slight tapping and at that point it was easy to pinpoint the couple valves that needed just a bit more adjusting. Now I have some slight noise when cold that goes away after a minute, which I feel is appropriate. Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted October 29, 2022 Report Posted October 29, 2022 Adjusting the tappets hot is the tuneup job many mechanics preferred to skip. Here's how to do it on a flathead six. Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted October 29, 2022 Report Posted October 29, 2022 (edited) Here's Keith's video on adjusting the tappet clearances hot. From what I read, you can do a cold adjustment on the exhaust and intake valves of .014". Then when the engine is hot, you adjust the exhaust valves to .010" and the intake valves to .008". So you will need some feeler stock of .010 and .008 to do the exhaust and intake valves. Edited October 29, 2022 by MarcDeSoto Quote
