I am looking for the part number for this Auto Lite starter spring . It fits on starter MZ4148  . It draws the bendix back into the starter after the engine starts . One end of the spring in the photo fits into a hole and the other en slides into a groove . The spring in the photo is broken so it isn't in the groove . The starter fits Dodge trucks B1B (T142) and B1-C (T144) . The proper name for the spring would help too .

I have an autolite catalog but mine does not list the part number.

So I know that my 39 desoto uses the similar foot pedal start lever.

So in the 39 Desoto parts book in Section 8 looked under heading Starter Shift pedal operated LHD.

Name of the part is: Return Spring  part number 852018

Then went to my 1936-42 Desoto master parts book  the same part number 852018 for listed for 39-40 Desoto,  41 Desoto 863821,  42 Desoto 957465 the part name is: Starting motor Shift Lever return spring.

The picture shows the same looking spring as what you are showing in your picture.

This is the best that I can do for you.

Not sure if this will help much, a search of the document does not bring up MZ4148,

and B-1-B/C only under Generators and Regulators. Neither is listed in the 'Used On'.

Thanks for that . One vendor says that he has one and I have asked for pictures and dimensions . I have found that and earlier spring has a smaller I.D. so I could not modify it as the spring sets on round shoulders that are larger . For now I am driving the truck and have the stomp lever pulled back with a coil spring tied to the battery box . I am thinking about a hardware store spring if I can find one with an I.D. of 11/16 inch . Also I don't know if I can reshape the hardware store spring .
