blueskies Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 My heater blower motor finally died for good. It's the original 6v unit, and I've been running it on 12v for about 3 years. It gets a pretty good workout around here in the spring and fall, when the outside temps are in the 30's. When Joseph and I drove the car to Tulsa, we went through the most un-godly torrent of rain I have ever driven through, in the dark, between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. I was wondering if we were going to need oars, or maybe a rudder... During this rain storm, which lasted about 3 1/2 hours, I ran the heater and defroster motors continuously, and they worked like a charm keeping the glass nice and clear. But when we started out on the return trip, the motor in the heater decided it was done. I removed the motor a couple of weeks ago, and disassembled it wondering if maybe the brushes were cooked and maybe could be resurrected with a file or something. What I found was that the windings on the rotor had thrown the solder that connected them to the contacts at the end of the rotor, where the bushes contact. I re-soldered them, and it worked fine for a bit, but died again. I'd like to put a new 12v motor in, but not sure where to look for one. I tried Neil Riddle, but he doesn't have any in 12v. Any thoughts? I'd still be driving the car daily, if it weren't in the 20's right now and no heater... The car is remarkably comfy when the heater is working. Pete Quote
teardrop puller Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Pete I would think you could go to a motor shop and have the motor re-wound for 12V. Down here you can, but who knows in the states. good luck kai Quote
Normspeed Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Will a voltage drop work with a motor type load? I see those on ebay all the time. Quote
oldmopar Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Not sure if it would be a direct fit but have you consider a blower motor from a late 50's when the went to 12v ? Ed Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Have you tried the Street Rod parts catalogs. They might be able to come up with a suitable motor. Other than that, you will probably have to have that one rebuilt to run off 12 volts to find a direct fit. If you want a reducer check page 177 of the JC Whitney Catalog. They have a Voltage Reducer that says it will work with heaters. You would need part number MS135606. The catalog I'm looking at says $22.99. Catalog number 723J-10. Just got the catalog the beginning of October. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Pete if you want to go the reducer unit I believe I have a spare used motor for ya. Quote
Normspeed Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Is this a great forum or what? Quote
blueskies Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 According the Neil Riddle, the switch to 12v happened in '56, so I might be able to find a '56 and later motor that is otherwise the same. Or have my original rebuild like I did with my starter. Or get another 6v unit and run it till it dies again... Pete if you want to go the reducer unit I believe I have a spare used motor for ya. I have the reducer, already mounted on the car. But I took it out of the loop after using it for a while, because it just didn't seem to move enough air. Once on 12v, it worked great! If I can't find another, I'll take you up on our offer Ed, thanks. Pete Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Since your weren't happy with the reducer route, I think I'd have the old motor rebuilt for 12 volts. You'll probably be happier with the performance and it shouldn't throw the solder on the windings off. You're already half there anyway with the motor out. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Pete; Carry your motor to NAPA or another parts store and see if they have a 12 volt match. Heater motors are somewhat universal. How many speeds does your motor have? Quote
PatS.... Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 How many speeds does your motor have? Don, seems like only one speed right now... Sorry, Don, had to do it!! It's early and I'm on cheap drugs. Quote

Lou Earle Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 on a 49 calddilac I swithced motors from 6 to 12 volt. Almost any auto electric shop should have a motor you cna adapt- I just had to make the housing attachments larger. you can use yoru same fan- the motors anre available in various shaft sizes. good luck for instance: http://www.3rivers.net/~cmac/cmac16.htm Quote
Lou Earle Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Maybe this would work if you fine another motor http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/12-Volt-to-6-Volt-heater-Blower-Motor-Voltage-Reducer_W0QQitemZ330180593620QQihZ014QQcategoryZ10076QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Quote
