Looking for a new heater blower motor

My heater blower motor finally died for good. It's the original 6v unit, and I've been running it on 12v for about 3 years. It gets a pretty good workout around here in the spring and fall, when the outside temps are in the 30's.

When Joseph and I drove the car to Tulsa, we went through the most un-godly torrent of rain I have ever driven through, in the dark, between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. I was wondering if we were going to need oars, or maybe a rudder... During this rain storm, which lasted about 3 1/2 hours, I ran the heater and defroster motors continuously, and they worked like a charm keeping the glass nice and clear.

But when we started out on the return trip, the motor in the heater decided it was done. I removed the motor a couple of weeks ago, and disassembled it wondering if maybe the brushes were cooked and maybe could be resurrected with a file or something.

What I found was that the windings on the rotor had thrown the solder that connected them to the contacts at the end of the rotor, where the bushes contact. I re-soldered them, and it worked fine for a bit, but died again.

I'd like to put a new 12v motor in, but not sure where to look for one. I tried Neil Riddle, but he doesn't have any in 12v.

Any thoughts?

I'd still be driving the car daily, if it weren't in the 20's right now and no heater... The car is remarkably comfy when the heater is working.

Have you tried the Street Rod parts catalogs. They might be able to come up with a suitable motor.

Other than that, you will probably have to have that one rebuilt to run off 12 volts to find a direct fit.

If you want a reducer check page 177 of the JC Whitney Catalog. They have a Voltage Reducer that says it will work with heaters. You would need part number MS135606. The catalog I'm looking at says $22.99. Catalog number 723J-10. Just got the catalog the beginning of October.

According the Neil Riddle, the switch to 12v happened in '56, so I might be able to find a '56 and later motor that is otherwise the same. Or have my original rebuild like I did with my starter. Or get another 6v unit and run it till it dies again...:D

I have the reducer, already mounted on the car. But I took it out of the loop after using it for a while, because it just didn't seem to move enough air. Once on 12v, it worked great!

If I can't find another, I'll take you up on our offer Ed, thanks.

Since your weren't happy with the reducer route, I think I'd have the old motor rebuilt for 12 volts. You'll probably be happier with the performance and it shouldn't throw the solder on the windings off. You're already half there anyway with the motor out.
