This light has is loosely bolted to the firewall on my 1940 half ton. I’m pretty sure it was added from another vehicle way back when as it doesn’t show a firewall light in the wiring diagram but I thought I’d check with the experts here before I get rid of it.

Definitely an add on. My '42 had a lever that engaged a mercury switch when the hood was opened. I wired it to the panel light switch so it would not come on by itself.

 

Would have come in handy if you were checking your oil in the dark.
