fred barre
Hi , I am new in this group and got a problem with my semi auto transmission . I have a 1951 Chrysler Windsor deluxe ( with the flathead 6 ) with a M6 transmission that doesn't work and I was wondering if I could put the M6 trans that was mounted in a 1951 V8 powered Chrysler . Should I changed some parts or are they the same ? Thanks for your answer .
Doug&Deb
Before making a change what’s wrong with your trans? I believe the trans will interchange. Does the donor car have fluidmatic or fluid torque? The Imperial website has troubleshooting manuals available for download. The M6 is a robust trans and most problems are external. I have the M6 in my Coronet so I’ll be glad to help you.
fred barre
Hi, the problem is that I have a mechanical noise (not a bearing noise , but a pinion noise) with a clank noise when it pass in 2nd or 4th gear . But it don't if I depress the clutch between 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th. Just like there is not enough oil pression . I check the governor , the solenoid , the oil level , nothing's wrong. Thanks . Doug&Deb
I’m stumped on what would cause that. Normally it’s a pretty bulletproof trans. Just wondering, how are your u-joints? Going out on a limb but you never know. I believe the M6 is the same no matter which model. I still recommend the Imperial website. All of the information is available for download. Going through the troubleshooting process may help isolate the problem. Keep us posted. I’m curious about this.
chrysler1941
There is a lengthy diagnose for M5/M6 transmissions in shop manual. As I recall it mentions clunking noise that alternate by using clutch is worn pilot bearings fault.

Doug&Deb
How many miles on the car? Have you driven it long? I’m trying to figure out what may have happened. There are certainly mechanical items that can wear on a high mileage car.
