PlugUgly Posted February 5, 2022 Report Posted February 5, 2022 A few years back I purchased this fire engine. Long story short, the motor was being worked on when I got it and I am just now getting to be able to reassemble it. My current struggle is where the fuel lines go. Nothing seems to naturally fit where it would seem it needs to and I may have an extra line that does not seem to have a home. I do have the dual carbs that are still connected. It would seem to me that the farthest right line goes to the carbs. the farthest left it likely incoming from the tank and should go to the top of the fuel pump. Not sure what the small line in the middle is for. It almost seems like I may be missing something like a fuel filter and a plug for one of the holes on the pump. Any help would be appreciated. 1 Quote
PlugUgly Posted February 5, 2022 Author Report Posted February 5, 2022 What is the piece in this picture that is circled in blue? My fuel pump does not have one, if its needed is there a known place to look to find one? Quote
Brent B3B Posted February 5, 2022 Report Posted February 5, 2022 Looks like the shop Manuel calls it in “Airdome” http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/manual/Fuel_pumps.pdf 2 Quote
PlugUgly Posted February 12, 2022 Author Report Posted February 12, 2022 Alright, well I have some major updates today. We were able to reassemble the manifolds and carbs late yesterday. First thing this morning I went out and worked on starting it. Keep in mind this motor has been sitting unassembled for around 12 years from what I can tell. the intake and exhaust manifolds were broken and we had to weld them. The balance tube was missing so my son made me a new one at school. A few observations from my efforts, It has an electric fuel pump and the factory fuel pump is just for looks, the electrical systems is spotty. My emergency lights work but no other lights. Brakes need attention. Long story short. I was able to get it started. I recalled a request to film the start up so I made sure I did. The file was too large to upload so I put it on Youtube. You can view it here 4 Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 That is awesome you brought it back to life after at least 12 years! Another running Moly Block engine?... those engines will easily idle down to 250-300 rpm when the carbs are set up right. Not that the engine needs to but they are a flawless running engine when right. Keep running it for awhile check, points dwell timing if you haven't etc. The manifolds were ofg and the sync'ing of the carb throttle plates probably might be necessary as you keep fine tuning it. Thanks for sharing your fire truck "I can do it" efforts and video!! These big Dodge trucks give me more satisfaction than any of my other cars and trucks... Keep on posting! 2 Quote

Its good to know that it should run well at lower RPM. Currently it isn't fond of running much lower. I will definitely be looking at ensuring everything is dialed in. This rig has several firsts for me. First positive ground, first dual carbs and first time having to rebuild the manifolds. I believe I may have a slight exhaust leak where the manifolds attach to the block. We did not have them surfaced after welding them. We just got it close and figure we would see how it did. I'll likely pull it apart again and have them surfaced properly. I find there's not much mechanically that I am not willing to try doing myself and this rig is quickly becoming one of my favorites. 1 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 (edited) I have had to get the two sets of manifolds surfaced myself. The intake/ exhaust manifold runner ports won't pull evenly/fully up against the block intake exhaust ports. Also Remember ..the intakes bolted to the exhaust manifolds are spaced apart by four washers. No gaskets are used intake to exhaust. Edited February 17, 2022 by Dodgeb4ya 1 Quote
