Had the engine running, then sat several weeks while I was working on other things. When I went to restart it, nothing. I discovered the distributer cap was damaged, so replaced that. Then must have done something because it wouldn’t restart. Yesterday I had the coil and four very old coils tested. All tested bad. It it possible to ruin a coil, if so how?

Well , one way is to leave the key on without the engine running and with points closed .
but that usually leaves an indicator that it happened, oil or other filler will get hot, leak out and be visible.
sorta unlikely on that many.

two questions:

how were they tested and fail numbers?

have you inspected and/or cleaned the points as it’s common for them to oxidize after long disuse
