Yeah it looks like in '49, Chrysler changed to the shorter canister type. At least according to the pictures I just saw on google.

Just to let everyone know who might be interested or who has the same oil filter cartridge as my '48 Chrysler with the 251.  The wix 51062 which is the same as the Napa Gold 1062, is not the right filter.  The cork filters on both ends of it is not wide enough.  That is to say the area on the screw on top, that seats against the filter ( same on the inside bottom of the canister) is similar to a half round and the inside of that rounded area is the same as the outside diameter of the cork gasket on the filter.  It's sort of possible that once the top is screwed on tight the extreme edge of the cork might seal against the inside surface of that half round area of the screw on top.  That cork needs to be at least another 3/4" overall diameter.

Since it was all that was available for now, I made a ring gasket so to say and adhered it to the ends of the filter to extend that gasket surface.  If I haven't explained that very well, I can send some pictures.

The fact that the Napa filter is longer makes no difference since that top piece is spring loaded.  It's all back together and working fine with almost 60 oil pressure.  The only difference is that since the Napa filter is skinnier, there isn't as much filter surface.  But it will do until I can track down the proper Fram filter for my next oil change.

At least I know what to look for now and if I can't physically see the filter at the parts store, at least I'll know to look for one with a wide end gasket.  The Fram gasket covers the entire end of the filter.

I order mine on amazon ... done .....

I was at the Vintage Power Wagon site a couple of days ago,and noticed they have some pretty good prices on drop-in filters.

They even have used canisters at a pretty decent price for people that want to add an oil filter.
