p24-1953 Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 A little history on me and my toy. We will start with the beginning. Laura and Obey Walker bought a 1953 plymouth new, when Obey died in 1965 Laura parked the car, when she passed away at the age of 104 in 1985 the car was driven to her daughter Stellas house, where it sat till 1994. Which was when my grandmother (stella) gave it to me for my 15th birthday. When i first got the car I changed the oil put a new battery in it and 4 new tires, and it started up within 5 mins. I drove it every day till I left for college, It never gave me any problems other than the master cylinder failing getting off the freeway one night. I had it repainted and just enjoyed driving it. But when I left for college i thought i needed something a little newer so I put it back in to the same stall it had sat in for 10 years. Well for my 30th birthday my wife suprised me and had it delivered over 1800 miles so i could have it to work on. I can remember going to visit my great grandmother as a kid and playing in this car when it ws in the garage. my wife wants to get the interior done, but when i sit in it the smell takes me back, this car smells great.... nothing like 50 years of gas exhaust and dust. i love it. and i am afraid if i redo the interior i will lose that smell. Below are a few pics of it in various stages. One of the best things i think is the fact that i have the original title signed by my great grandfather, grandfather, dad and now me. 20 years ago.... 10 years ago... 2 months ago.... Quote
Normspeed Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Great story and a very nice old Plymouth. That's a neat point about the title. Talk about a one family car! Quote
RobertKB Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 That is a great story! Thanks for posting it and welcome to the forum. There are several '53 Plymouth owners on the forum, including me. Nice to have another '53 with us. Also, isn't it nice to have a wonderful wife who appreciates the car as well. Quote
Brad Lustig Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 You keep hold of that wife of yours! Very cool story. I got my Dodge when I was 15, too. It was my grandfather's and his aunt's before that. He bought it from her in 1964, I think. Lots of similarities. Quote
Brendan D25 Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 I also would like to welcome you and enjoyed your story on the history of your car. It's a wonderful thing your wife did for you. Hopefully you will enjoy both for many years. Brendan. Quote
bob_amos Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Welcome aboard. It's always nice having another 53 around. Mine is a 54 Cranbrook 4 dr sedan. The last one produced at the Evensville, Indiana plant on the first day of production. Car number 301. (Or so the previous owner said, and he did produce a document that supported it. Didn't get that document with the car though. But the VIN does support his claim.) The photos all turned ut as red "X"s in your post. Sure would like seeing them. Your history of the car is the best part owning your car. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Bob, the photos worked fine for me on two different computers. Quote
mackster Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I liked the story! I love the fact that it has been on the family for a long time. again welcome aboard you will feel like your between family! LOL. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Exceptional story, I know what you mean about old car smells. The old car smells I get sitting in my 54 parts car takes me back to when I was a child we would go out to my grandpas farm and play in his mothers old pontiac parked in a field and left to rot. My other 54 which has had the interior re-done does not smell the same maybe they will come out with an air-freshener that will have the old car with rotting interior smell. Aroma therapy for me! Thanks for sharing your story . Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Superb car with exceptional one family history. Congratulations! If I were you, I would keep it as original as possible. Would not even think of re-doing the interior, not much of exterior either. Original condition cars will be appreciated better to restored in the future. It can be restored anytime by anyone, but once restored, it cannot ever be returned to original condition with the patina and unique history... Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Great Story, Great Car, Great Wife, What more can I say…, Welcome aboard. You’re a lucky guy.!! Chet… Quote
bob_amos Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 The photos worked for you guys? Gee, I have my home computor and shop computor and they did not work on either. I wonder what I did to screw them both up? Leave it to me to muck things up. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 See if this will open anything Bob. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x117/ykp53/of50590419.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x117/ykp53/of505904428.jpg Quote
