Dodgeb4ya Posted April 6, 2020 Report Posted April 6, 2020 The FTD instead of being just the std Fluid Drive coupling (Fluid Matic) like in your car....FTD is an actual torque multiplication torque converter. It's optional on all 51/52 Chrysler's and power applied to the rear end is bumped up quite a bit. So it's certainly necessary for the 4 pinion rear end more so with FTD than Fluid Matic. Even so you should still use the 4 pinion rear axle. To blow up that 4 pinion rear end either it ran out of oil, sat for a long time and the gears rust pitted or driver abuse.? Quote

I’ve got a 1952 Chrysler Windsor in the shop at the moment and I can’t find anything online after scrubbing the Internet for a few hours.Appreciate the help. Quote

DonaldSmith Posted April 9, 2020 Report Posted April 9, 2020 The coupling is not the same as the transmission. The transmission takes the 10 weight oil, instead of the usual gearbox oil. There are several threads about the fluid for the coupling. The closest is hydraulic equipment oil, such as by Tractor Supply Co. Someone else can chime in. Quote
