While replacing the clutch on my 48 Plymouth I noticed the input shaft bearing on the transmission is worn out.I researched  this subject but I haven't found any good instructions for replacing this bearing. Are these transmissions hard to rebuild, are all the parts available, should I just replace one component or rebuild the whole unit.

Thank You

If one is worn out I would replace all and install a new small part kit. You will need a big puller to get the bearing out, but the overhaul is actually pretty straight forward. I would also do the synchro.

I just tore down my transmission to inspect, and I'll tell you all those needle bearings on the countershaft was a job.

Trick is have a dowel that fits inside that is just the length of the gears. It will hold the needle bearing in place. Drop it in the case then push the dowel out with the actual shaft.

I have removed several front bearings with out tearing the trans down if that's the only issue. Front input shaft bearings are a common noisy high wear item.

.....I just remove the bearing retainer

.....Remove the input shaft (smaller) snap ring and tanged washer behind it

.....Pull the input shaft and bearing out as far as you can ( usually only a 1/16" ) to get a couple wedges behind the bearing snap ring ( I use 2 Screw drivers) under the outside of the bearing snap ring

.....Use a rawhide mallet or brass/copper hammer

.....Lightly tapping on the input shaft while wedging the bearing off the input shaft using different bigger tapered wedges between the bearing snap ring and front of case.

NOTE.... don't try to remove the input shaft... you cannot remove the shaft with out pulling the lower cluster gear! This for Strut type syncro transmissions. Late style Pin Type the shaft will pull out.

Just another way of doing this job if you have decent mechanical skills!
