Reccomended timing

I have seen several different suggestions on what our base (non vacuum) timing should be.  Researching today I have seen everything from 2 to 8.  What is best/right?

Advance till it pings, then back off a couple degrees.

I like 4 BTDC.

I set mine with a vacuum gauge, set it till you get the highest vacuum reading and then go for a drive to check for pinging, if it pings just retard it a little.
