DennisP&B Posted March 31, 2017 Report Posted March 31, 2017 I am working on a 52 buss coupe and at the point of needing to install the rear windshield but I cant seam to find the correct seal for the back glass. I have talked to steele rubber and I have rear seal part #40-0445-81 from steele witch is supposed to be correct but the rear seal that came out of the car has an extra lip to cover the area where the headliner attaches, The new rubber has nothing to cover this area. Not sure if wind lace is need or a garnish molding is missing. any help or photos would be very appreciated. Quote
ptwothree Posted March 31, 2017 Report Posted March 31, 2017 I vote for a missing piece molding. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted April 1, 2017 Report Posted April 1, 2017 Welcome to the forum. I have a '52 Plymouth sedan and also a '51 business coupe. On the sedans, they made a change to the rear window trim in mid-1952 and went from a four-sided inside painted trim molding to a molding that only runs along the bottom of the window. The rear window gasket was changed to hold the headliner on the remaining three sides. They may have done the same thing for the '52 business coupes. Is your inside metal trim four-sided or just along the bottom? Also, from what I've seen the replacement gaskets don't have a slot for the outside stainless trim to be installed. Does the the Steele gasket have the trim slot? Quote
RobertKB Posted April 1, 2017 Report Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) I have a Canadian Dodge D39 business coupe which is the same as a Plymouth but with Dodge trim. I used the same gasket from Steele (part #40-0445-81) and it was the same as the old hard-as-rock rubber one that came out in pieces. It has the locking strip which goes on the inside. It had the correct slot to take the stainless trim and the gasket fit perfectly. I highly recommend that you follow the instructions in the shop manual exactly when installing the rear window. I had a professional glass shop come over and install it. At first they just tried it the way they thought it would work. It didn't. I suggested they do what the shop manual stated and they had the glass in, with trim, within a few minutes. I was a bit antsy at the time it was done as the window is unique to the business coupe and finding another would be extremely difficult. Unless you are braver than me, I would recommend glass professionals do the job following the instructions in the manual. Front window gasket was OK but not as perfect a fit but with a few mods I got it to fit. The most trouble was caused by the outer divider not fitting the rubber that well but I eventually got it, also as shown. I have not installed the inside rear window moulding yet as it is still packed away. As far as I remember, it is a one piece four sided moulding that hides the entire window gasket on the inside.
