48Windsor Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Well, I got my manual finally. Been going through the Fluid Drive diagnostics. Everything has checked out until I got the governor switch is not opening. Can this be looked at with the governor on the tranny?? I assume there are some points stuck or not making.?? Tomorrow I'll trace the wire for continuity first, to make sure its ok. I did go ahead and replace the 10w oil in the tranny since I was there anyway. On to more testing. Tom B Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Tom B, All good things to do. also check to see if your RPM's are down (say 450-475) low enough to allow for the Upshift. I assume your not Upshifting. also check the Fuse in the Corner of your Transmission Relay Box and be sure it is not burnt. Tom S. Quote
rb1949 Posted February 4, 2017 Report Posted February 4, 2017 Compare your manual to the one for the Fluid Drive: http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Lit/Master/012A/cover.htm Yes you can remove the Governor Cover to check/clean points, PROPERLY. The unit just unscrews to test off the car. That old wiring is always questionable, so I just made a new harness and replaced it. Good luck figuring it out. Quote
48Windsor Posted February 4, 2017 Author Report Posted February 4, 2017 Tom S - thanks, checked all that. rb1949 - Thanks - heard that site mentioned somewhere before. Their info is better in some ways than the manual I bought. Will look at putting in new wires. Since its a driver, don't need original looking harness. Tom B Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 4, 2017 Report Posted February 4, 2017 Tom B., Not trying to get you to spend money, however, F.Y.I. on ebay (1948 Chrysler Governor, Kickdown, and Selenoid) Tranny parts for sale in one lot. I personally think it is probably your wire harness or just dirty or low Tranny Oil and Filter, or dirty Governor points. But for you guys that like extra parts. Your Choice. Good Luck, it is probably a simple wire fix. Tom S. Quote
48Windsor Posted February 4, 2017 Author Report Posted February 4, 2017 Tom, thanks for the heads up on the parts. I 'm hoping I don't have to go there but knowing my luck, who knows. Man that wiring is brittle after 70 years. Can't hardly touch without the insulation falling off! Tom B Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted February 5, 2017 Report Posted February 5, 2017 The 1946 thru 1948 factory mechanics service book A-1 on the Chrysler and DeSoto M-5 Hydraulically Operated transmission...... diagnostics booklet only.. There is also another special "A" M-5 transmission booklet .... which describes "Operation" I have shown pictures of these special Service books and below is an online service booklet A-1 link you can look at, http://www.imperialclub.com/~imperialclub/Repair/Lit/Master/012B/index.htm The above info is for a 1949 Std trans and the 1949 and later M-6 transmission which is different than your M-5 trans.
