Electric power steering

Has anyone here ever considered installing electric power steering on these old MOPARS  ?  Wonder if the unit could be mounted on the inside of the firewall.  The used unit is very cheap to buy.  Im thinking of looking into the possibility.

I've never tried it,but they fit either under the hood or dashboard in a VW Jetta and similar small cars,so there is no reason one wouldn't fit out of sight in a 40's or newer Mopar.

If it were me considering this,I thing I would check in with somebody like Ron Francis wiring works to see about buying a stand-alone wiring harness for it and instructions on how to wire it,what controller was needed, and total cost before I got too involved in doing it.

I considered electric power steering before my adventure adding power steering to my DeSoto.  The unit I looked at could not be located under the hood where it would be subject to heat and moisture.  But there would be no room under the dash for the unit, without terminating the steering column at the face of the dashboard  - no good.  In addition, the gearshift shaft would have to be reworked.  Now, maybe some of the electric units used in various cars may reside under the hood.

I suppose these units come in different types and configurations.  If you got a unit with the controler wouldnt it just be 12 volts to the controller. Probably not that simple.  I see they do sell complete kits for things like dunbuggies but dont know how much power they have for using on a car.  Ill put this idea on the list after I get the Explorer rearend in and have an emergency brake again.   LOL

Here is one complete system-not cheap but still will require steer column shaft work, but---

This companies website answers many questions if you are at all interested. Seems these do not require a lot of wires. Do the factory( wreck yards) units require just a few wires or they also hooked into the whole car computer?/ No idea.
