Merle Coggins
1/2 ton and 3/4 ton axles are basically the same and would swap with no problem. However, the 3/4 ton front axle has slightly larger spindles and 11" brakes, vs 10" on the 1/2 ton. Also, the rear axle will have the larger brakes. Also, the 3/4 ton axle will have 5 X 5" bolt pattern with studs and nuts whereas the 1/2 ton axles have 5 X 4.5" pattern with lug bolts. NiftyFifty
If there are plans for the front disc brakes, then the 1/2 ton axle is the only one that works with the parts list.
Jeff Balazs
Merle and I both have 3/4 ton trucks. Disc brakes can and have been fitted on our trucks ......but it is more work than the 1/2 ton set up. Also the 5x5 wheel pattern and the larger lug studs that go with it add to the parts sourcing and work that must be done. On the plus side 3/4 ton brake and wheel parts are a bit rare so selling off what you don't need will help you raise some $. Jeff
Merle Coggins
Since he has both 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton axles he can always swap out the spindles and brake assemblies if he wants to run the 4-1/2" pattern wheels.
NiftyFifty
Faster to swap the whole front axle, then it is to swap spindles...I would take the springs as well and swap at the shackles...they you get the lighter springs if there was a difference in 3/4 to 1/2 front springs. Swapping the rear axle is a big benefit again...and same thing..a few less or lighter springs in the rear axle on the 1/2 ton.

Not sure what benefit swapping the rear axle out of a 3/4 ton into a 1/2 ton would be? Unless it is in good shape and the 1/2 ton one is shot. Otherwise it is likely to be a 4.10 just like the one in a 1/2 ton. The single biggest asset of a 3/4 ton is it's longer 116" wheel base and the smoother ride that goes along with it. NiftyFifty
I was referring to going from 3/4 to a 1/2 ton axle...not the other way around...the OP wasn't really clear about what he was doing. I also believe the 1/2 tons had other rear diff options then 4:10 no?
Jeff Balazs
Oh yeah. He called the 3/4 ton a parts truck but you are right it isn't super clear.
