CowboyConnor Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 I am new to this and am looking into buying the offenhauser dual carb setup for my 1950 special deluxe sedan. Of course I am looking for cheaper carbs that would work easily or another carter 6-595 in ok shape. I don't know much about carbs so act as if you're talking to a 12 year old. If you have any links to carbs that would pair up perfectly and be easy to install please include them in a reply. Thanks for you're advice in advance! Quote
knuckleharley Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 Best thing to do is buy another carb like the one you already have, plus two rebuild kits. These are single barrel carbs and it just doesn't get any simpler. Just follow the instructions that come with the rebuild kits. The Offy intake is a good choice because they can be bought pretty much anytime, and they are cheap compared to everything else. Just make sure you buy the carb linkage when you buy the intake manifold so you can save on shipping. Not sure about the heat for the Offy dual carb intakes. If they bolt to the stock exhaust manifold you are good to go until and unless you split the exhaust for dual exhaust. If they come plumbed for water from the heater/radiator,splitting the exhaust is a much simpler process The main thing you need to do before purchasing the intake is to email Offenhauser and ask them what comes with their intake manifolds, and what else you will have to buy to get the carbs to operate like they should on your engine (carb linkage, gaskets, fuel filter, fuel block, air cleaners) and what you have to do to provide heat to the carbs in cold weather. It really sucks to blow a wad of money on something and then find out you still have to spend another wad to make the first purchase work. Knowing everything you will need and how much it will cost from Offy gives you the chance to compare their prices to the prices of places like Summit,Jegg, etc, etc, etc Besides, sometimes if you buy it all at once from a manufacturer you can get a discount. Even if you don't you save shipping by buying it all at once. 1 Quote
deathbound Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 I was running an Offy dual carb intake with 2 of the carbs in the following link, which ran great out of the box. I switched to a Nicson intake with 2 stock carbs for nostalgic reasons. I'm also using Langdon's cast headers & mini HEI-which I will eventually switch with my stock distributor and Pertronix set-up. http://www.langdonsstovebolt.com/store/online-catalog/#!/Carter-Weber-Carburetor-With-choke-pigtails/p/1222026/category=361512 Quote
casper50 Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 I have an offy that I'm going to put on. I've heard that it's best to have the expansion plugs welded up as they have a tendency to leak. Quote
deathbound Posted January 12, 2016 Report Posted January 12, 2016 Had the expansion plugs welded on my Offy, since I heard the same thing. Truth or urban myth, just didn't want to have to take it apart and redo it. Quote
CowboyConnor Posted January 15, 2016 Author Report Posted January 15, 2016 If I decide to buy headers for this thing on top of the dual manifold, will I need an electric fuel pump? I have heard this somewhere and was wondering. Thanks Quote
deathbound Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 My headers from Langdon conflicted with my fuel pump, but I've seen others installed with the stock fuel pump. I made a block off plate/gasket and used an electric fuel pump mounted near the gas tank, with an in-line filter between the tank and pump and also a filter before the dual carbs. Quote
