i just bought a 48 D24 off craigslist. i live on long island and im 22...the car is 3 times my age!. im a mechanic and have owned many old cars(mostly chevys)

the car has almost no rust. the doors dont sag and inside is nice too. brakes were just rebuilt along with the suspention.

i was wondering if there is a way to get a shop manual for the car. also im worried that some of the wiring might be on its way out. can i get a replacement harness? cost?

also what are the 2 knobs on the dash on what looks like the speaker?

thanks for any help. seams like everyone thats into these cars is here in one spot. its also nice to see that those people are willing to offer intelegent help. one of my other loves is british cars and the jaguar guys will tar and feather a newbie with a question.

Welcome to the board.

You will find some service manuals on ebay, both original or reprints. Or, you should be able to get an exact reprint from Crankin Hope. http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrtsZ0QQsassZdaggie7 They also sell on ebay and direct if you contact them. The link is to their ebay listing. They may not have your book listed right now, if not contact them.

Not sure what knobs you are talking about on the radio speaker. Maybe post a picture and someone can help. Also, if you click on the link "Return to P15-D24.com" above it will take you to the main site. There you will find a lot of information about our cars.

I just bought a hard copy manual on EBay for $18.95 plus shipping last week, and spotted one this morning on CD. If you want it on CD,it will cost you 30 bucks.

Here is the ebay auction page for the 30 buck one.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1&viewitem=&item=170126466422

If you want a hard copy just look at the top of the auction page where it says,"manuals and literature, car and truck, dodge",and just click on the word Dodge. It will take you right to where all the ones on ebay are for sale.

Go to the P-15 D-24 home page and click on the links on the left. Can't remember now which one has the wiring harness contacts, but there are at lest two supplies of the correct type wiring harneses, and you can buy just the dash wires, the engine wires,or whatever you want. The bad news is it all looks pretty pricey to me. I'm trying to keep my 42 reasonably original but I'm not restoring it,so I will probably go with a Ron Francis Wire Works harness.

You might want to contact Joel of this forum you can send him a PM from the member's list. Joel lives on Long Island and has been messing with a couple of Plymouths and an old Packard for a while. The wiring on these cars is pretty simple, only one fuse onthe head lamp switch, and a 30 Amp circuit breaker for the rest. If you are going to be up and under the dash, you can probably do a wire at a time for the ones you find suspect. Lots of times the wire will be fine but the old cloth and shellac isnulation will be failing. Just remember you are dealing with 6V and 6V likes nice thick wires for current flow.

The number one mistake seen on these cars all the time is the replacement of battery cable with new ones designed for 12V systems. If your primary battery cables arent as thick as your little finger, change them. #2 gauge is minimum, 00 is recomended. If you cant find them in your area, have a welding shop make up a set for you out of their welding cable.

Number 2 wiring item is clean tight grounds, all that current flow needs to go somewhere and with out good grounds it doesn't work well.

When you get to the rear of the car, Stock lighting has ONE center mounted brake light, the out board lamps being running or running/turn indicators if so equipt.

Most systems on these cars are simple, well engineered, and dependable as a hammer.

Don't know which knobs you are refering to but the one up near the center post of the windshield controls the windshield wipers. There is also a toggle switch to the right of the sterring column mount under the edge of the bottom of the dash. This controls the instrument lamps. Most of us joke that this switch is two positions dim and dimmer. Usually cleaning the contacts on this restores some of its function. If you get a chance to drive at night, the Speedometer lighting is supposed to change colors from Green, to 30mph, to yellow to about 50mph, and red over 50.

Welcome and Good luck.

Welcome to the Forum, We don't tar & feather too often so ask away. You can learn a lot from the people on this Forum, I know I have.

obviously Jaguar guys NEVER have to ask questions... hardee har har. if i've learned anything, it's that you always learn something if you're trying hard enough. even getting something WRONG teaches you not to do it that way again... so welcome aboard from a relatively new member myself. my own car is only 10 years older than me... (it's a '52...) and i'm very impressed with the build quality and engineering of the machine. it runs like a sewing machine! even my v8 fords don't run that quietly.

Yup,the one in the center of the trunk lid.

>> so that means my wires are ok back there then....what page from the owners manual should i copy and keep for all the local law inforsment thats going to pull me over for both tail lights being out?<<

Don't confuse brake lights with tail lights and turn signal lights. The center trunk lid light is ONLY a brake light. The two tail lights on the fenders are nothing but tail lights. They are only turn signal lights if the car had turn signals installed and dual element cups and bulbs put in the housing.

>>my turning lights dont work. is there a relay or something that i can check?<<

Sounds like you have a fuse blown or a bad flasher. Fix that and your taillights will start working again. Look at the wires coming out of your turn signal unit, and follow them under the dash. You will see a flasher there, and most likely a in-line fuse. If you don't see a in-line fuse, put one in-line.

You might want to do like a lot of people do,and just put dual element cups and bulbs into the tail light housings on both sides, and wire them up to your brake light. That way you have a brake light on each side,as well as a 3rd brake light in the center of your trunk.

Check the ground at all lamps. Also signals are resistance sensitive if one bulb is out they won't light or flash the remaining bulb on thea side. Make sure all contacts are good and clean. Also the contacts in the signal switch lever they may be corroded form lack of use.

the signal taps the brake light circuit to inturrupt the brake light to flash it. When the brake light are off, the power comes through the ignition to power the lamp. Smart little switches ain't they??? The easiest way for power the center light and make it work independent from the signals is to run a jumper from the brake light switch to the lamp. The switch is hydraulicaly operated and is located near the master cylinder on the frame. If you are familiar with switches used on motorcylces and ATV's it is similar. Find the post that is powered when the brake is on, and jumper a wire from it the trunk. up in the corner of the trunk on the driver's side is the wiring junction for the rear lights trace the one from the center lamp back to this bundle and hook the new wire to it. There should be a plastic but connector in among the other wires.

Or you can do what I did. I bought a couple of stalk type signals from a wrecked motorcycle. I ran the signal wires to these aux lamps, then wired all the bright filaments to the brake lamp. So I have teo running lamps, three brake lamps and seperate signals.

Welcome Jaguarsurfer. Here's some parts suppliers, if you need them.

www.rockauto.com

www.oldmoparts.com

www.collectorsautosupply.com

www.vintagepowerwagons.com

Also, there's quite a few mopar sixers here www.olskoolrodz.com and find the forum. If you wade through the crap you'll find some useful stuff, including a guy called Hudsonator who runs a flathead six in a competition tractor at 6000rpm!

i have to thank all of you guys for the help. i also have to let you know that wiring is NOT my strong point.

the "tail" lights have 2 filiments(on and onner) so if i taped into the center brake light how could i use brake lights and signals on the sides?

why is it easyer to run the jumper wire?

It isloate the brake lamp and is the easiest way in my opinion to have the center brake light and not have it flash with the signal. There is another way and perhaps some one who has done it will chime in.

Just run a wire from the brake light switch directly to the center brake light on the trunk. That isolates it from the turn signals and tail lights.

Dammit Greg, I wish you would stop putting up pics like these. Every time I see this car I start drooling all over my keyboard. You got it right.

Oh and what's going on up front there? Were you letting your imaginary friend Harvey drive?

Well the driver in the Pic is an Elephant. If harvey was driving you couldn't see him. Could you????? Back in the day some folks refered to Small Block chevies as Mouse Motors, Big Blocks as Rat motors, and Hemis were Elephant motors. Since we don't have a Hemi (Elephant motor) we have an Elephant named HEMI, so we still can answer Yea, Its got a Hemi..........
