First it was the gas tank, then low power, then nada. I narrowed it down to my fuel pump.(I was hoping I diagnosed this correctly). I installed the new fuel pump today. I had to replace one of the brass fittings so I got up the nerve to replace the fuel line from the pump to the carb. I wanted a fuel filter near the carb where I could easily access it. Those cheap benders are just that and/or I am really bad at bending tubing. I got it done though. I noticed when I pulled my old pump that it seemed to work but the new pump's spring is so still that I can barely squeeze it. So the old one was bad. More hope that I was headed down the right path. All hooked up no leaks and it runs!! no stuttering. I will test drive it tomorrow to see if I really got somewhere. I will paint the heat shield silver. So far I have painted most of items I have taken off of the car as a reminder to where I have been. Eric

Eric;

Hope your problem is cured.

Suggest you do not quit your day time job (assuming you have one) anytime soon as you will never make it as a writer of rhymes with a line like "funky fuel failure finally fixed??":D :D

Good Job Eric, hope to report a successful repair soon on the engine coolant leak at the back end of the engine. Hope to do this on my week off next week.........Fred ps tell you what you get your car running good, I'll get mine going good we then meet in Fargo ND, now hang on, mine is having trouble with 10 miles right now, Fargo is 200 miles from here hehehehe

Fred, I keep following your saga and it reminded me a bit of mine. I got great advice here but sometimes the worse case scenario is thrown in and that really gets one worried. I envisioned my car sucking up the tank sealant!! Fargo is a long ways off. I haven't taken it out for a spin yet but will later today. keep at it, you'll get there. I was at first thinking Don was telling me to keep the day job because of my mechanical skills!! (Which would be good advice) Now attacking my literary skills, that hurts. I am a nutural when it comes to bad writing. It ranks right there with my spelling skills. Eric

Ed, I came through the Twin Cities on Tuesday. I was in a hurry to get home, hit I 35 at about 7:00, still some heavy traffic at times. Just south of the cities, there was a 47/48 Chrysler coupe parked on the West side of the interstate for sale. Eric

I think I've seen it. Was it near Medford? If its the car I'm thinking of one of our plymouth club guys checked it out and it wasn't nice enough for the asking price

Shel, You know I remember you saying that before. I completely forgot about it. With all of my troubles trying to figure out where the lines were blocked and they weren't just a failed fuel pump. The line from the tank almost imediately goes up. Should it be level? I had a filter right before the pump but when I replaced the pump I moved it in front of the carb. Access isn't very good right in front of the fuel pump. I will have to find a place towards the rear. Thanks Shel.

PS A straining funnel that one could use as he filled the tank, would that be of any benefit? With a sealed tank, what sort of debris could get into the tank? Thanks, eric

Shel, I might as well replace the rest of it. The front portion looked tough. The cheap little bender I used on the line from pump to carb was sure crappy. You can not make real tight bands. (I couldn't) Thanks, Eric

I just helped put a fuel line on a vw thing from front to back. We used the new style charcoal grey brake line that is bendable by hand . MAN What a differeince in installing a line. We did it under car on ground- just set it and bend as u go - it was the easiest I have ever done. Got it a NAPA. I will never use the bender again
