The Oil Soup Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 I recently put a cherokee rear axle in my truck for the better ratio and modern brakes. My problem is that the DS won't slide back 3/4" so I can bolt it to the rear end. Shouldn't it slip off the front yoke or is it limited by a clip or nut? I couldn't find the correct info in the shop manual (yes Don, I do own one). So has anyone run into this issue? Thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Shop manual does not cover modifications. When I replaced my differential assembly I had to have a new drive shaft made. You may have to do the same. 1 Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Yes, it is limited to how far it can slide, your going to have to get your DS lengthened or a complete one built if it's at the end of the extension. Quote
The Oil Soup Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 Well I think the next step is a T5 Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Ya, if you have any plans you might as well do it now, as you will need another DS then too. I used one out of a mid 80's half ton that had a manual transmission...but it still needed shortening...but yours will be a different size again likely Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Do you have weight on the axle, or are you still supporting the truck in the air withstands under the frame? As you compress the springs the axle will move back and allow the driveshaft to slip into place. Quote
The Oil Soup Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 The truck is sitting on the springs but I haven't set the pinion angle yet so that could resolve the problem. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Pretty slim chance that your going to find 3/4" + and acceptable amount of travel, which would be another 1-2". You don't want the driveshaft right at its limit in the rest position, it needs to have room to move both ways, or you risk pulling it apart on a bad bump....and that would not be pretty Quote
