jpartington Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 The speedo on my 52 b-3-d does not work. Only thing I have done so far is I disconnected the cable at both ends and twisted the cable inside the casing. It spun on the other side too, so I know the cable is not snapped. What other tests can I do to figure out the issue? What are some of the problems that could cause if not to work? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 not sure of the truck manual but the car manual has a very good section of probable causes and effect regarding the speedo, odo and the cable including troubleshooting inside the tranny for slipping pinion or stripped gear on the cable drive...look to the Instrument and gauge section... Desotodav Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 Check to see if the needle moves when you spin the small wheel on the back of the speedo (I have power to my speedo in the photo attached for the indicator light - so yours may look different to mine) ... if that spins you may need to check the gear drive on the transmission...... if that is good then you need to send a PM to B1B Keven as he is our resident speedo/gauge repair man. jpartington Posted July 13, 2015 Author Report Posted July 13, 2015 Thank I will try to do that today Quote
jpartington Posted July 14, 2015 Author Report Posted July 14, 2015 I pulled out the gear drive on the transmission and it looks like the piece on the gear drive that would receive the squared end of the speedo cable is missing. So I believe putting in a new gear drive will fix the issue. Quote
jpartington Posted July 19, 2015 Author Report Posted July 19, 2015 How many teeth is that gear supposed to have? 14 or 15? The one that was in the truck had 15 but it didn't look like the right one for the truck. I put in a new one with 15 teeth and now the speedo at least works but it doesn't read my speed accurately, I know I'm going faster then it tells me I am. So I'm wondering if it really should only have 14 teeth on it. Does anyone know? Quote
MBF Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 You may also want to do some pm on the speedo head while you have it out. That long screwlike item that appears on the input shaft of the speedo head contains a wick that should have some oil on it to keep the input shaft lubed. Quote
Desotodav Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 The number of teeth on the speedo drive 'pinion 21-85-5' varies depending on your type of transmission/diff ratio/tire size. I have attached a segment from the manual with part #'s for you (assuming that you are running a 3 speed transmission). I think that my 52 truck is running a 16 tooth gear. I will remove a gear from one of my transmissions at the shed if nobody knows the answer to your teeth question. Just as a matter of interest though, where did you get the new 14 teeth gear which you have installed? Quote
jpartington Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 It is a 4 speed. And also the gear that I purchased is 15 tooth not 14. Quote
Desotodav Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) Table for 4 speed gearbox/speedo gear attached. So where did you buy that 15 tooth gear? Edited July 20, 2015 by Desotodav Quote
jpartington Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 Someone was selling it on ebay Quote
