likaleica Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 I'm busy preparing my Plymouth for wedding duty in 7 days time and a pretty disastrous fault has developed - one of the rear doors won't open! The external handle moves as it should but the door is stuck fast. I did adjust the striker plate a little yesterday as the door was not shutting properly - and this improved the action....,then this. Unfortunately the service manual does not detail how to remove the door - but please does anyone know if I can do this by drifting out the pins in the external hinges ? Will they go back in ok ? Anything else I can do? And does anyone know how I get the darned lock to work properly ? This is going to be a major issue if I can't fix it so advice will be gratefully received !!! Quote
DonaldSmith Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 Did you try lifting up the front edge of the door? (For suicide doors.) This just happened to me. The rear door would unlatch and open partially, but would not release fully from the latch. I lifted the front of the door and it came free. Someday I'll readjust the latch. 1 Quote
Solution likaleica Posted July 11, 2015 Author Solution Report Posted July 11, 2015 Thanks Donald - going right out to do that now! Quote
likaleica Posted July 11, 2015 Author Report Posted July 11, 2015 Donald - you are a genius, sir - worked first time!! Many, many thanks! I'm going to try to get the striker plate back to where it was, to avoid the door jamming even if I have to slam it shut harder than I'd like. The door has of course dropped on the hinges - there is a much wider gap between the top of the door at the hinge side than at the bottom. After the wedding I'll undo the bottom hinge mounting screws and put a shim behind the plate to lift the door up at the front. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 if your doors are dropping and has play when you lift the door end up and down...shimming is not your answer ....odds are your hinge pin is worn..needs reamed next larger pins size and install that proper pin diameter..trying to adjust and shim is a band aide at most...if you are effective at all. DonaldSmith Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 (edited) Did I ever tell you kids how I made a hinge out of a padlock hasp? Back in aught-four. (I used a store-bought pin, from the local car parts place.) Edited July 11, 2015 by DonaldSmith Quote
