Mattias78 Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 Hi! i´m installing a petronix ign! And i´m not a very good mecanic:( I have removed the points and installed the ignitor! And connected black/white wire to the - side of the coil The + side is connected to the base of the distributor( see pic) But were to connect the black wire? it says to ignition switch wire (see pic) Is there some were in the engine bay i can connect the black wire!(see pic) If somebody has an answer please explain it with very simple words!! my englisch isn´t very good!! Thanks Quote
ledfootslim Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 The ignition wire should originally have gone to the negative side of the coil, if you are still running a positive ground setup. The other side of the coil just gets grounded. Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 19, 2015 Author Report Posted June 19, 2015 Hi! The red and white twisted wire in picture was the wire that was attached to the negativ side on the orginal setup! Should i remove it from the coil and attach it to the "black" wire from the ignitior? And yes it's still positive ground! 1 Quote

That should work- I'm not sure why it is twisted, but I would attach it that way and see if it starts. Quote
suntennis Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 The way I read your diagram, there are 2 wires from the Petronix unit inside the distributor coming out. The black wire should go to the horn relay where the original coil wire (negative post) was attached. The other wire from the Petronix unit should attach to the negative post of the coil. There should be a wire attached to the positive post of the coil going to ground or the frame. This should complete the circuit. The original wires going from coil to horn relay and coil to distributor are to be removed. Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 19, 2015 Author Report Posted June 19, 2015 I found a wire diagram and as far as a can tell there are 2 wires (on the original set up) going to the minus side! 1 to the horn and 1 to the ignition swith! If i take of the twisted red/white wire and try to id witch wire is the horn/ignition and connect the ignition wire to the black ignitor wire, it should work right?!? Do the horn stop working if i just take that wire of? /Mattias Quote
suntennis Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 The ignition wire that was going to the coil and the black wire from the Petronix should be connected to the horn relay. The wire from the horn relay to the coil will be removed. The terminal on the horn relay where this wire was attached, now connect the ignition and black wires. If the ignition wire is not attached to the horn relay, you are correct by saying the horn will not work. Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 hi again! This drives me insane!! Tried to connect the wires to the horn relay but it will not fire! Not sure witch terminal to attach the wires! tried them all....:/ Do i have the right ignitor! (see pic) Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 On my 6V positive ground Pertronix installation I eliminated the terminal on the side of the distributor. The wire from the ignition switch is joined to directly to the ignitor lead and the other lead from the ignitor goes directly to the negative side of the coil. According to the instruction sheet these wires should be sized at #20 awg. Hope this helps. Jeff Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Thanks Jeff I will give it a try!! Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Tryed your way jeff and it feels like it wants to start but very lumpy!! Like the fireing order is really really of!! The engine "jumps" and coughs!! Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 Mattias; Did you remove the distributor to install the ignitor? If so perhaps the timing is now way off? All the ignitor does is replace the points and condensor.....everything else (timing and firing order) should be set and adjusted the sames as before. One more question. Did you replace the original coil with a new matched coil from Pertronix? If not that may be causing the problem. Hopefully this helps. Jeff Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Hi again Did not remove distributor! Or any sparkplugg wires! I bought a kit and the coil came with it! The part nr it #40011 It's a flame thrower 1,5 ohm Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 This is how the ignitor install looks like! Are there any thing else i need to remove? Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 Mattias; That number sounds familiar. Wasn't there a rubber grommet or boot on the ignitor wires to insulate them? You can remove the old ground wires from the breaker plate as they are no longer needed. The rubber boot I mentioned fits through the hole where the old wire terminal goes through the side of the distributor. The only other wiring that should be checked is the positive side of the coil.....It should have a #20awg wire to ground on the engine. Jeff Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Hi again! There were no grommets in the kit! And there were no wires Comming out from the distibrutor! The only wire that was connected is the wire that attaches under the distributor (see pic in older post, green wire) and goes to the positve terminal(original setup). i drilled a hole in the cap to get the ignitor wires out! Can the old breakerplate wires be a problem? Quote

Drilling a hole in the cap should not be required. I am confident the instructions did not suggest that. I suggest you replace the cap and continue troubleshooting. Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 There are nowhere to get the wires out! As far i can see!! Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Don! You are right! Think i found the hole! Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 Replace the drilled cap with a new one. Quote
suntennis Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 (edited) The red wire with question mark should have been attached to your coil. That terminal is where to attach the wire from ignition switch and the black wire from Petronix unit. The other terminal with a question mark has the wire that goes to the horn button via inside the steering column. Could you take a photo of the distributor showing Petronix unit mounted and how you routed the wires from the unit? There is a terminal on the distributor which may need to be removed and wires from Pertronix unit pass thru where the terminal was. Edited June 20, 2015 by suntennis Quote
Mattias78 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Will give it a try tomorrow morning! Hope that vill fix eveything! I'm starting to lose my mind!! Quote
