My 49 was running a friend of mine replaced plug wires and when he did he removed the coil and did not mark the wires, when trying to start it smoke started coming out of the dist, figured he had wires crossed, since then new plugs, points, cond, cap, rotor, coil, and now it just won't start is there something in the dist that I am missing, I have the pos side of the coil terminal going to the dist and the neg side going to the ign switch, the other two wires that went to coil not sure any help appreciated out of ideas here

Wrong firing order/wires misplaced?

Where there is smoke there is damage done. Did you look for the damage? Wrong firing order will not cause smoke or damage. If the smoke came from inside your distributor that is where I would look first.

Suggested wrong firing order because of the non-starting issue after everything was replaced.

Also, cap, rotor, etc should be specific to your model distributor (see tag on side) when ordering replacement parts.

You might read through the thread '  Acceleration Problem '  started by Joe Flanagan .  You will find a lot of information on a couple of distributor wires . On your wire without insulation ... your insulation might have fallen off .
