mrwrstory Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 Some one on the previous thread said, "they're making resistor wire to look like vintage",,.....or something like that. I'd like to know more,.....like a source. I did call a couple of vendors who make the vintage looking wire and was told it's modern wire and insulation covered with the woven lacquered outer sheath. However their plug wires were solid core and not appropriate where "resistor" wire is required. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who is knowledgeable on this subject because I would really like to incorporate that look on the engine I am building. Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 Bill, I mentioned this as part of the post mentioned. Just saw the resistor type/cloth covered spark plug wires mentioned in several Streetrodder/Hotrod/Rod and Custom mags over the past several years. Did not use the same myself. The sources? I'll have to pay more attention as you want some of these. I do not buy these books anymore but just got several piles from an old friend that shares his after he's read them several times. I'll do the same! Time for me to watch! DJ Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Man finding anything with cloth cover-resistor type is hard. One co. had some thing with a stainless steel core is Supposedly good to use with electronic ign. but i'm not at all convinced. Attached one possible way but, ugly! Will keep looking! DJ Quote
mrwrstory Posted October 23, 2014 Author Report Posted October 23, 2014 Cool! Thanks DJ. I'll do some searching too. Quote
mrwrstory Posted October 26, 2014 Author Report Posted October 26, 2014 Spent some time searching this am and have come up short. All I can find so far is disclaimers or statements that solid core won't work w/HEI Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Sorry Bill if what I've read about these resistor/old look wires seems to a lost except for one company that claimed their stainless wire center/cloth cover was usable. Will watch for more info. My web searches went no where also. A forum member from the past who still shows up on this forum occasionally- blueskies- said in the engine section of his 50plymouth.com website used a Langdon's mini hei ignition on his 50 Plymouth with cloth covered soild wires than Landon said May cause a problem but blueskies was going to try it. Could not find whether he continued to use them or changed to resistor newer style wires?. Maybe a PM to blueskies to see an answer on this as he did put some higher mileage on the 50 before he sold it several years ago now. DJ Quote
mrwrstory Posted October 27, 2014 Author Report Posted October 27, 2014 Just got a reply from John Brillman https://www.brillman.com/ who has cloth covered "supressor" spark plug wire. He says same as "resistor" wire and for use with modern electronic ignition. https://www.brillman.com/store/configurable_product_detail/7.8mm-cotton-braid-spark-plug-wire I'm pleased to hear that and plan to order some after deciding on the color. 1 Quote
busycoupe Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Did cars in the fortys use cloth covered ignition wire, or was it outdated by that time? Quote
mrwrstory Posted October 27, 2014 Author Report Posted October 27, 2014 (edited) Did cars in the fortys use cloth covered ignition wire, or was it outdated by that time? Some other than me would probably have a better answer but both my P15 and 48 Ford had rubber covered plug wires,...'tho they were solid core as I recall. In my case with the Hemi, it's a '56, I just like the look. Edited October 27, 2014 by mrwrstory Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Glad you found some one making this, Bill! Always seemed to me someone could make big $$$$ just putting common resistor wires with the old style coverings if just for looks!! Many appreciate having old motors with hidden or less noticeable updates for reliability and actually drive their vehicle! Hope they can protect the rights to it for being the first to finally recognize the demand out there. Good on ya, as the Aussies say, per my year there. DJ Quote
