pflaming Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 We are researching a car trip from Bath, ME to Niagara Falls, to Winnipeg, Canada via upper MI, WI, MN to Winnipeg. Question: The upper parts of the three mentioned states appear to be very wooded. Would a drive through there just be a very long drive through tree lined highways or would that be a very interesting drive? Time of year, early September. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 That sounds like a beautiful trip, especially at this time of the year. Be prepared for long stretches of thick woods and many deer. The UP of Michigan, upper Wisconsin and Minnesota are quite well populated so you needn't worry about a lack of services. Those areas are focused on tourism also which makes for small town attractions. Even north to Winnipeg is a nice drive with things to see and do. So, if you don't like trees, don't go. I went around Lake Superior and it was tree heaven. I was beginning to get my fill of trees by the time we got to Wawa, and never saw any type of law enforcement. But then, I never saw need for any, either. See the mint in Winnipeg, its really something. No free samples, tho. 1 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 As Neil said northern WI, MN, and MI are heavily wooded but there are plenty of small towns and lakeside resorts along the way. Mid to late September would give you a better chance of some nice fall color if you have flexibility in your schedule. It's just past peak color up there right now. If you can plan a route along the south shore of Lake Superior you'll have a nice ride. Just be sure to have a jacket handy if you stop to walk around. It'll get quite chilly if the wind is coming off the lake, even in mid summer. 1 Quote
