19vette82 Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 I am working on a frame up project. It is a 1946 Dodge WC 1/2 pickup. I am getting ready to paint the frame, but am wondering if I should do anything with the rear end before I continue. I found some numbers and they are 663473-24 I also saw a CC stamped on the rear end. is it a 4.73 ratio and what is the 24 referring to? Is this a good rear to pair with the 218 flathead? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) Not enough info if this is the right rear end...what are your intended use for the truck..are you willing to upgrade to modern axle or search for alternate ratio's... you cannot guess at the gears on the casting number of the hog head...look for the ratio to be stamped on the flat of the carrier housing near the drain plug and also on the boss atop the carrier as it bolts to the housing... as to your question if right rear end for the 218...is it stock, if so Ma Mopar deemed it suitable..again..it is a working man's truck..if you want street manners...you probably not going to like the internals... mattimuss Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 I also have been trying to figure out the gear ratio in the rear end in my '41. Here are the numbers: Quote
_shel_ny Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 Found my ratio marked in 2 spots. On the flat On the top (hard to see) Quote

_shel_ny Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 Horse has to put it's head down, or it's all for naught Quote
Dave72dt Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 The gear ratio numbers will be stamped in numbers because of the different ratios that can go in a housing. Cast numbers will be part numbers, date codes or engineering numbers Quote
