ol'skool Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Working on a 53 Dodge with the fluid drive/truck-o-matic/gyro-matic. Engine is rebuilt and ready to go, everything is set, timing, etc…. Rebuilt the Carter B&B from Mikes Carburetor so all parts are correct. Simple carb. This is the issue. Vehicle starts and idles very nice, increase the idle and everything is good until around 1000RPM then the engine starts bogging down and almost stalls out or will stall out, stumbles, etc. Let off the accelerator and it idles like it should at 450RPM. This is in neutral. It acts like it's flooding out. I can see gas squirting out through the main jet, actually, its very sensitive, just touch the accelerator and fuel comes out. The accelerator pump is sensitive on this one. Went through the service manual and checked everything, partially disassembled the carb and inspected, fuel is in the bowl, everything looks good. Not sure what is happening so anyone have any. Help…... Quote
Niel Hoback Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Is the vacuum advance connected and working? Quote
greg g Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 is the vacuum passage to the step up jet clear and is the step up jet moving properly. Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are fuel fouled is there any black smoke from the exhaust as you rev it? Is your float set correctly and is your needle and seat valve working and closing properly? Quote
ol'skool Posted August 8, 2014 Author Report Posted August 8, 2014 Vacuum advanced wasn't looked up from timing it so now it's hooked up and it runs better. Able to get it above 1000rpm but there is still hesitation/stumbling. Not as bad but it's there and if I were to drive it, it would probably have a hard time under any kind of load. No black smoke from exhaust at all. The float is set where it should be and when I remove the upper part of the carb the float level is set right so and the needle/seat must be working properly because the fuel level looks correct in the bowl. If the needle/seat were stuck open, wouldn't the fuel be coming out the vent tube in the air horn. Like I said, it's running better, ease into the throttle and it does rev up fairly good, not the best, but better. Now to figure that out. Will check timing again and set idle again. Quote
hendo0601 Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Is your choke operating correctly? If it is staying closed it will reduce air flow and increase fuel causing stumbles and bogs. Quote
ol'skool Posted August 8, 2014 Author Report Posted August 8, 2014 The choke is open. Doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold. When the choke is closed, it stalls out. Open the choke up, hit the starter and it fires up and purrs like a kitten. Can't be more happy about how it idles. The issues are when the rpm is increasing as it comes off idle. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Check your plug gap while you're at it. May be a too wide. Shoot for .025 1 Quote
ol'skool Posted August 8, 2014 Author Report Posted August 8, 2014 I set the plugs at .034 but I will check. Good idea to pull them out to get a look and see if they are black or clean. Timing is a concern. I set it at 2 BTC at idle. I will check overall timing at 1800-2000RPM and go from there. Quote
