claybill Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 i have a 46 convertible...and the gooseneck/swan neck, side mirror flip flops...!! alas! there is no screw for tightening.!! why not.. anybody know the secret to tightening up these floppy mirrors..? claybill Quote
greg g Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 splain where its flopping, the mirror head itself or the arm attached to the door /body? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 The mirror should be attached to the body by two studs with nuts on the back side. They go where that short little cowl trim piece goes. Are in a tough place to get at in order to tighten. If the head is loose, then I don't know a good fix for that. Quote
eric wissing Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Maybe the mirror flops not where it attaches to the car but at the ballsocket thing-a-ma-jiggy. Mine do it too. Eric Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Bill, If your mirrors look like the picture Bob posted, and they are flopping where the arm goes in the mirror head, they're more or less toast. Only time you can tighten them up there is if you have screws around that area. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 If the head is loose, I suppose you could try some clear silicone around the joint, or set it just right-- then try a spot or two of JB Weld. Quote
builtfercomfort Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I've had some limited success with clear runny superglue. I cleaned out the ball area as best I could with solvent and slathered superglue in the whole ball area, held it in place with duct tape while it dried. Was okay, not great, not too strong so if I needed to reposition the mirror I'd just move it (breaking the superglue seal) and glue it again in the new position. I think clear silicone would probably be better, or something called 'Plumbers Goop' (a trade name) which is clear silicone that seems a little stronger and more flexible. Maybe there is some way of crimping the socket or knurling the ball? Quote

I know I said they may be toast too. However, just rememberd!! Recently was looking at someones street rod catalog, may have been Speedway. They had new mirror heads only for sale with adjusting screws on the back of the head. Maybe you could remove the old head and put one of those on. Would be worth the expense to try one. After all, those original or reproduction swan neck mirrors aren't cheap to replace. The most you'd be out if it didn't work is the small cost of one mirror head. If it works, you saved a bundle. claybill Posted June 13, 2007 Author Report Posted June 13, 2007 eric...yes, i'll be taking the 41 convertible or the coupe..dont know yet.... i called speedway and asked for offy 2 carb manifold.....$241.00 inc linkage. that was last fall. i know of others that buy from them, then put on ebay and make a hundred!!! bill Quote
kevinanderson Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Eric-I bought mine through a local parts store. think it was Champion Auto. Included linkage. Quote
eric wissing Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 I never think of using our local stores because I am so used to them not having what I need but I should check out Motor Parts Central. They have a huge Mopar sign from their earlier store that they moved inside. I should take a picture of it. They do sell speed equipment. Eric Quote
claybill Posted June 14, 2007 Author Report Posted June 14, 2007 i tried to get a manifold from 'offy' in california at the point of mfg. NO WAY! they only sell thru dealers. and any dealer who handles 'offy' stuff can get you flathead ply stuff. most places dont carry early ply stuff, but if they carry offy merchandise they can get what you want...but you probably have to have them call in an order. .. just experience....bill Quote
