Barsteel Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Hello! I'm looking for a complete set of dog dish hubcaps for my '52 Plymouth, so the first place I tried was Ebay. A search for '52 Plymouth hubcap gave me several choices, but then I noticed that several were slightly different. One version has ship surrounded by about 8 concentric rings, with very little room around the ship. Some of these smaller circle caps have the center section painted red, while others do not. The other version has the same ship with the same concentric rings, but it's a larger circle of rings with more room around the ship. Can anyone tell me if one design was used on a particular model vs. another, or if the caps of that basic design vary by year (some may not have been for a '52) or ?. Here's a link to a current auction that shows the small ring and big ring caps side by side. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1951-1952-PLYMOUTH-DOG-DISH-SMALL-HUBCAPS-WHEEL-COVERS-/251424299329?hash=item3a8a0e5941&vxp=mtr I plan on using stock dog dish caps with beauty rings, and I'd like to get the correct ones for the car. Thanks... Chris Quote
Young Ed Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Thats one 52 plymouth question I've never seen come up before. However depending on the answer I bet I have a set for ya. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 I've owned '52 Plymouths most of my life and never noticed a variation in ring sizes. There were, however, two hubcap diameters: 9" for short-wheelbase Concord fastback and business coupe, and 10" for the Suburban and 118" wheelbase Cambridge line. The Cranbrooks came with full wheel covers, and those were optional on the other models. My parts book only shows one number for each type of '51-'52 hubcap: 1324127 for the small ones and 1324128 for the larger ones. Maybe the ring diameter was different on the 1949-50 cars: they have different part numbers than the '51-52. I'd say to pick which ring size you like, and then get 4 that match. Quote
Barsteel Posted February 7, 2014 Author Report Posted February 7, 2014 Ed - PM sent. I'll have to measure the 1 cap I have and see what size it is. Mine is a 2 dr post coupe. I have yet to ID the exact model, probably will post the stats later today. Chris Quote
bob westphal Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Chris, I have never seen the design on the e-Bay caps. Most of the caps I have seen and own are smooth with a single 5 1/2" ring with a ship in the middle. I think they were all originally red in the center with the ship shiny stainless. My '48 caps have a stylized ship underlined with the word Plymouth underneath. Our club has a number of Plymouth dog dish caps of varying vintage. Bob Quote
suntennis Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 I have a 52 Suburban that has 4 concentric rings about the ship. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) You can see they are different. One may be a 51 and the other a 52. Edited February 8, 2014 by BobT-47P15 Quote
suntennis Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 The hubcap on the left is on my 52. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Some seller on eBay is taking the shotgun approach by calling this a 51-52 cap..........so no real help here. I'd say.....do some more research as you can........otherwise, pick the style you like best or can buy for the right price in best condition and go for it. Most people of the world will not know if they are exactly correct for the car or not. Edited February 8, 2014 by BobT-47P15 Quote
Barsteel Posted February 8, 2014 Author Report Posted February 8, 2014 Hello! My car was definitively ID'ed as a Cranbrook in another post, based on the body serial #. Anyway, I have ONE hub cap that came with the car, and that is one with a 5 1/2" circle, same as the right hand hub cap in the Ebay picture in included in a link on my first post. Wether it's the correct cap or not, it's the one I'd like to use because the rims are painted the same color as the car, and I like the look of dog dish caps with beauty rings. So, if anyone knows where I might find a set of the large circle dog dish hubcaps, let me know... Thanks... Chris Quote
