Plymouthy Adams Posted January 18, 2014 Report Posted January 18, 2014 I have also purchased an industrial walking foot sewing machine since having my car trimmed out. That is why I was on the lookout for material and mentioned finding it at a thrift shop...that way I can practice and not suffer any real loss on waste etc as I hopefully manage to come to speed on interior work. Time will tell... Quote
james curl Posted January 18, 2014 Report Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) You can not find anyone to cut your grass for $32.00 an hour? You have to be kidding, when Wal Mart and your local fast food and grocery pay a max of $10.00 an hour to their employees I would think you could get a lot of jobs done for $15.00 an hour. $35.00 an hour times 2000 hours a year equals $70,000.00 a year, how can you afford to live in Reno with prices that high? Where I live the price to do a four door car complete is less than $4,000.00 in cloth, If you want pleated and rolled vinyl with all of the rolls matched up then expect to pay around $8,000,00 for the complete car. Not when the government pays you to set on your rear end for 99 weeks. Quote
james curl Posted January 18, 2014 Report Posted January 18, 2014 How much does the "Government" pay a week to sit on your rear? Give me facts, I doubt that the government pays anyone $1400.00 a week to sit on their rear. If I could move to Reno and get paid $1400.00 a week by the government to sit on my rear I must be a fool to live where I do. Around my parts most yard maintenance people as they are called use zero turn mowers and mow all day, five to six days a week and would be happy to make $35.00 an hour, most make less. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 In Indiana, you get $143 if you had been working previously in the year. Quote
Eneto-55 Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 Any older Singer machine can handle this weight of fabric. My mom reupholstered the seats in the family car (53 DeSoto), and she & my grandma always redid the couch/sofa a couple of times before being completely replaced. A few years ago my wife sewed a leather Bible cover for me, but that was a bit difficult for her machine to handle. Like Paul says above, there are lots of cheap sources for used leather. (I got the leather from a leather skirt I bought for that purpose at a second-hand store.) Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 19, 2014 Author Report Posted January 19, 2014 That makes sense to me. The fabric on these seats was not all that thick. Basically the same stuff you might make an item of clothing out of. There's the vinyl, of course, but that stuff isn't all that thick, either. Here's a good video on how to sew the kind of seam I think is needed for upholstery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJPedK-2ck Quote
