Don St Peter Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 I only need the rt. front brake cyl. for my 40 ply and find that both Roberts Parts and Bernbaum now only sell all four as a set. Does anyone know how to get only what I need? Thanks Don Quote
steveplym Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Did not look at Roberts, but Bernbaum has the wheel cyls sold per side. Looks like $49.50 for Front Right and $49.50 for Front Left. If your replacing one wheel cylinder on the right probably a good idea to change the other one, if not all 4 up front. Part # G295 http://www.oldmoparts.com/g.htm Quote
claybill Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 just buy the whole kit for one side. you get new rubbers and everything..and save install time. i worried over nickel and dime savings on some of that stuff. just get a new one and install.......now at least i feel like i did the right thing....its a good feeling! bill Quote
Ed Griffin Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Or Advance Auto? Both Napa and Advance carry them for the 46 to 48 models. Advance had the better price. Think that you can go directly to partsamerica.com for Advance if I remember correctly to see. As mentioned, best to buy the whole set. Not a good idea to only swap out one side if the other hasnt been done recently and even if it has I'd still take a look at condition. Quote
Don St Peter Posted June 2, 2007 Author Report Posted June 2, 2007 Guess I did not communicate fully and completely. I did a " complete" brake job less than a year ago, including all new cylinders, etc. etc. I have had slight but continuous leaking on the rt. front since the new job and have decided ( after 3 new kits ) that I have a bad Rt. wheel cylinder, hence I am looking for only the front rt. cyl for my 1940 P-9. Both Bernbaum and Roberts have changed their policy in the past year and no longer sell individual cylinders, only all four. NAPA does not go back that far. Thanks Don Quote
james curl Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 If my memory serves me right the 41 model only uses one wheel cylinder per side. The front brakes look like the rear brakes. The adjustment ecentrics are at the bottom and the full wheel cylinder is at the top just like old Fords. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 You should be able to get one from Kanter without buying a whole set. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 Don, Did you check Len Dawson? I got individual wheel cylinders from him years ago for my '41 P12. Jim Yergin Quote

De Soto Frank Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Don St. Peter, When I was re-doing the brakes on my '41 De Soto (same step-bore wheel cyls as your '40 Plym), I was lucky to find three NOS United (NAPA) wheel cyls at a swap meet. I had to purchase the remaining cyl (RF) from Bernbaum. I put new cups in the NOS cyls, and I was able to source the appropriate cups a la carte from a local Mom'n'Pop that had a nice little sectioned-box full of them. That said, other than finding a new or NOS cylinder ( Roberts and Berbaum were the only suppliers of "new" that I found), I think your only option is to have your offending cylinder bored and sleeved ( If you still have your original take-offs, you could send them.). A number of places offer this service, among them: Apple Hydraulics in NY state, White Post Restorations in White Post VA, and Brake & Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis (www.brakeplace.com). Before going to that expense, it may be worthwhile to pull your leaky cylinder and take it to a local machinist to have the bores checked to see if they were not machined correctly in the first place. If the bores are straight and true, it might not be the castings' fault... The down side to sleeving is that they need to do two bores and two sleeves, so it runs around $120 to do a wheel cylinder. The rest of you guys with the 1942 & later brakes that have the single-piston wheel cyls up front, consider yourselves lucky... that stuff is still readily available and comparatively cheap... Good luck to all ! De Soto Frank Quote
Young Ed Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 When we were working on Dads 39 we wondered why you couldn't just have it bored and sleeved to 1 standard size. I know his cylinders were expensive too and each corner is different. Quote
Paul Beard Posted June 5, 2007 Report Posted June 5, 2007 Advance auto.com They sell new wheel cylinders on line or in their stores. Quote
