flathead Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 On my 1948 B1B the oil fill tube is unsecured and fits loosely in it's location, allowing water the get into the pan. I'm assuming the tube should be a snug, press fit. I'm tired of water getting into my oil, any suggestions people? Thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 On my Desoto engine there is a clamp bracket to keep the oil fill tube secure. The bottom end is a slip fit and I have never had a problem with water entering the crankcase through that slip fit. Quote
flathead Posted November 18, 2013 Author Report Posted November 18, 2013 I can make the bracket, but should I apply some silicone around the perimeter? Currently the tube rattles around loosely, probably from years of being unsecured. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 Correct/Expand your tube with this exhaust pipe expander to make it fit the block tight and proper with one of these...http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-32500-Exhaust-Pipe-Expander/dp/B0002STSNU.. Or maybe hopefully get another good tight fitting one. Or the easy way- seal it in the block-JB Weld or really sloppy.. silicone it. Quote
JBNeal Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 a loose fill tube can be made more secure by expanding the base. This is a trial & error process that can be done with a pair of pliers or an anvil + rubber mallet. I have used the horn on an old anvil to open a fill tube that did not have the bracket, and used some large pliers to distort the edge slightly to really lock it in. The tube should be able to be removed when required by carefully working the tube back & forth while pulling up, and be able to be installed by hand with the reverse method. Quote
flathead Posted November 18, 2013 Author Report Posted November 18, 2013 I'm on it - thanks fellers! Quote
