Rustychucks Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 As much as I am in love with my three on the tree, I long for a floor shifter. I'm aware of the pricey T-5 swaps. I love my flatty and intend to keep it. Locally, there is a man selling/parting out a 1946 dodge panel van. He has the original motor and trans pulled and swapped in a 454. Could I swap in the trans from his van to my flatty? I suppose getting his motor and trans to drop in is an option, but like I said... I love my motor. Also, I'm having trouble finding any info as to which flathead was in the 46' panel vans. Any help would be appreciated. As an incentive, if I get some good answers ill post new picture. Quote
Robert Horne Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 Consider a 5 speed TK5 Ford Ranger, 1983 to 1987 swap. I installed one in my 38 Coupe. It is doing very good, was an easy installed. Quote
Robert Horne Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 No adapter needed. 1938 bell housing, 1987 Ranger trans.. 1 Quote
Young Ed Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 You will find the truck trans to be a very different beast. They require a larger mounting surface and have a different bolt pattern. Also while the bellhousing to engine connection is the same the rest of the bellhousing is very different and won't go into a car without major changes. You'd be better off finding a late 30s car transmission before they went to column shift or just going to a modern trans. Quote
wayfarer Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 You really don't want the old truck 4-speed. The t-5 swap will allow you to maintain the stock bell, but read through Mr Horne's swap thread using the Ranger trans as it may prove easier and cheaper than the t-5. One other option is to locate the bell used in the late 50's that has both the L6 and V-8 block bolt patterns. While I don't know if the side mounts are the same as yours, it is easy enough to mount a late A-833 4-spd or 3+1 OD. The Ranger setup will still be cheaper unless you have an A-833 under the work bench. Quote
Daliant. Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 (edited) Don't know how your fabrication skills are or maybe you know someone who is handy but this doesn't look like it would be too hard to build, or you might get lucky and score a shifter off of ebay but floor shifters for mopar 3 speeds are pretty scarce and as far as I know nobody makes anything like that anymore.
