I am planning on converting my old 6v to a 12v system. Is there a small or mini alternator that any of you have used that works in very tight areas? I have a GM style one wire but its too big with the mods I have made on this Pilot House truck. I would prefer a one wire type set-up. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I dont know what the big deal is about the one wire alternators, my understanding is that the second wire is a sense line that tells the alternator how much to put out, one wire alternators are actually two wire ones with the sense wire terminated at the same post you hook on to for your charge. Now your out driving at night with your; heater, headlights, radio, fog lights, ect... and your one wire alternator is getting feedback from the sense wire that everything is good! When actually your drawing your battery down till eventually things get dim. I threw that one wire alternator all the way back to napa and bought a two wire unit that i ran the second wire to the battery, now my alternator knows exactly whats happening where it counts.

Street rod shops sell mini alts, and many small Japanese cars formt he 70's and 80's had pretty small ones.  Datsun 1200, Toyota Corrolla, Mazda GLC.  Some of the small pickups also.

I'm partial to the single groove ones off of Toyota 22r engines. Great fit in tight quarters. V belt Ranger or V6 units are fine too, just avoid the serpentine belt versions, for some reason they seem less durable.

 

If there is room, I like the round case 61-69 Mopar units (single field) or square back dual field version. The Chevy unit is comparable, and less expensive, but doesn't have the visual appeal.
