Don Jordan Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Sorry - that was a tad misleading. But while I have your attention: I took my steering wheel off to have it re done (it's beautiful) but I don't know why I can take something that's working perfectly and screw it up. I put the wheel back on, hooked up the horn and it beeps when you turn the key on. There aren't that many moving parts - what could be wrong? Quote

I put the wheel back on, hooked up the horn and it beeps when you turn the key on. There aren't that many moving parts - what could be wrong? I remember horny I think? The wire that runs down your column is probably grounded. You may have pinched it or your horn relay could be stuck closed. All your horn button does is ground the circuit so look for something to cause it perhaps a bad spot in the wire insulation. Try disconnecting the horn wire from the relay, does the horn still honk? If it does it can't be anything in the steering column. Let me know what you find, I'm still trying to remember what horny ment? Quote
_shel_ny Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Check your other P15 to match up that everything is in the correct order. Someone posted sometime back that they corrected theirs by turning the spring a bit. Quote
Mark Haymond Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 When something like this happens to me I ask myself, "OK, what did I touch last?" You took off the horn ring or button and the steering wheel, so I bet the problem is there, and horn ring or button parts are grounding out the wire that runs up the inside of the column. Perhaps you could take the steering wheel parts off slowly, testing for the horn sound as you go. That may reveal which specific part of the assembly is stuck in the "blow-the-horn" postition. Fix that and you will soon be enjoying your new looking steering wheel. Quote
Don Jordan Posted July 31, 2013 Author Report Posted July 31, 2013 If I turn the key on and touch the wire to the horn relay then it beeps. I don't want to take the horn button and ring off again. Those three screws are a pain in the horn. I keep thinking I missed a washer some where. I've got to check the parts book to see the exploded view. It's something silly. It always is. If worst comes to worser I'll just put a button in somewhere. I just bought a gas tank - there's another thread - later. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Don since that was the only area messed with since you had a functional horn I think you need to take the botton and ring off. The fact that you said the screws were a pain to install makes me think so even more. The couple times I had mine apart those 3 were no trouble at all. Quote
_shel_ny Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 If you are using your horn as was intended, having a non functional horn ring/button does not make much sense. If you are just using the horn to say hi/bye then I suppose an alternate location horn button is OK as you then have time to think about where it is located. Washer, spring, T. Pretty simple set up. Check it, I am sure you will find the problem. Quote
Don Jordan Posted August 3, 2013 Author Report Posted August 3, 2013 I don't know why but when I have a problem it's usually an easy fix but a pain in the butt to find. My horn would beep when I turned the key on. Could not figure it out. I guess for all you real mechanics it would be a no brainer. For me, however, it took some looking into to. What I found was the 3 allen screws holding the horn button on were too long. They were tight but I couldn't snug down the horn button and the ring was loose. How silly is that? I don't know if having the steering wheel re done or if I lost some spacers but problem is solved and I hope I can save someone the aggravation of going through the same thing. Quote
MaineP15 Posted August 3, 2013 Report Posted August 3, 2013 Thanks, My car is doing the exact same thing now after removal... I will check this fix! Quote
