morson82 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Hello everyone......I was wondering if anyone out there lives near Vandalia, Michigan. Its located just north of the Indiana border, near South Bend. I am looking to buy a car there and would like to have someone with some knowledge of these cars to take a look at it for me, I live in Connecticut. I have spoken with the current owner several times and he is having a hard time answering my questions specific to the car. I will even pay someone if necessary. I have been burnt bad on Ebay and am trying to be as careful as I can. Please, if anyone can help let me know. Glenn. PS: the wife is still in the dark about the car......so SHHHHHHHHHHH! Quote
claybill Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 what is it and do you have a pic? what questions are you asking. i am not close but sometimes a car gets around and we may know of it..formerly from chicago, now in western illinois. bill Quote
morson82 Posted May 22, 2007 Author Report Posted May 22, 2007 Hi Bill, the car is a 1942 Plymouth P14, Special Deluex Business Coupe. I need someone to go and take a look at the car for me before I drive the 800 miles to get it. The following is what the owner has told me. [1]been store in a barn for past 25-30 years [2]has one small rust spot on drivers floor [3]has several small pencil size hols in drivers side rocker [4]has small through rust on passenger side cowl, just above rocker [5]trunk is solid, not rust [6]need to know condition of inner rockers, part that is on an angle and welded to the rocker and then to floor board [7]any other obvious and serious issues with the car. The photos of the car were taken and posted by the owners friend and the owner does not have a digital camera to send better pics of what I would like to see. Just trying to get a better grip on what I'm about to endure, both with the car and my wife....haha. Please, if anyone can help that would be great. Glenn Quote
Reg Evans Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Looks like a good project Glenn. Say....any luck on wrapping up the 42 Dodge bumper and parts and sending them to me? Quote
morson82 Posted May 22, 2007 Author Report Posted May 22, 2007 Hi Reg, Sorry for the delay with that.........I can get the bumper taken apart and packaged with my sons help and try and get it out to you before I have back surgery on June 5th. As for the bracket, that will have to be at a later time, when my back heals up. Again, sorry for such a long delay. Glenn Quote
claybill Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 that 42 cupe looks ok to me...if the price is good i would say go for it...it is a rare piece. price should reflect the condition. bill Quote
claybill Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 importantly..does the motor turn over? interior. dash shuold still be nice, but seats may be roted..and full of mice crap, if in a barn. wish i was still in chicago i would go for you. any other replies? bill Quote
Guest 50Plymouth Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Did old battery get left to leak acid and eat up metal under hood? I second definitely asking about engine turning over. Was it stored with fuel in tank? (Just reminding its good to know these "surprises" ahead for when it time pay for fixing them - He can sniff to get an answer there) If he won't do that much and give honest answer I would be extra cautious. I boughten cars in worse condition, but made them at least hook up a battery so I could hear it turn and know not too much was torn into. Quote
morson82 Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 Okay, here is what I know.....The car was purchased by a father and son and the two were to restore the car together. (Almost sounds like "the little old lady" story) Any way, the son died that summer in a car crash and the father was so upset, he put the car in a barn and left it there untouched. The son in law stated that the barn was actually boarded up by the father. The father died and now his widow is getting rid of his belongings. The son in law stated that the car sat in the barn for 25-30 years. All the trim, in and out is there, still has original spare tire in trunk, and the car complete. As for the engine, the son in law told me that he did not want to try and start it due to it sitting for so long and not wanting to do damage. He did say that the engine is not seized and the fan can be turned by hand....Also that there was a mice nest found in the car, but only one........where there is one mickey.......there are a 100. So what do ya think........give me some more questions to ask the guy before I start my journey west........ Glenn Quote
morson82 Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 Oh yeah, I almost for got........I have a tenative agreement with the gentelman for $1800.00 what do you all think about the price....let me know Glenn Quote
RobertKB Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 If the price is right you can't lose. 42's are pretty scarce and this looks like a good project. I would jump on it right away if it was near where I live. Quote
claybill Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 go for it!!! it has original dash wood grained too. nice steering heel. this car will clean up, i am sure. for 1800.00...i would get it. bill Quote
Charlie Olson Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I recommend you pay a professional auto appraiser to look at the car and present you with a full, detailed report. It may cost a few hundred dollars, but then you don't run the risk of blaming a good hearted friend looking at the car and missing something and you blaming them or you ending up with a money pit hobby car. I speak from personal experience. Quote
DAVE KNOXX TENN Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 some more pics Go get that car loos good Quote
claybill Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 this appears to be a VERY ORIGINAL CAR. and that has value.! its only 1800..getting it will be another 600..!!unfortunately. bill Quote
