Norm's Coupe Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 Ok, I know I mispelled words in the title. We all know the postal service raised the postage from 39 to 41 cents the other day. However, they claim they needed that increase to maintain and give good service to the postal customer. Well................ Today we received an envelope that looks like some sort of greeting card in the mail. On the return address it gives some professors name who had an address of Verona, WI. That's about 100 miles from me and I never heard of the guy. That's not so strange though. The best part is, the addressee is someone in New Mexico. Now, to make it even better, the stamps or the envelope has never been canceled by the post office. Now, we've all had mail delivered by mistake and that happens. However, this one takes the trophy, especially after paying extra postage to get better service. We will put it back in the mail box and hopefully the addressee will get it sometime in the next decade. Quote

Niel Hoback Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Is your postman's name Cliff Clavin by any chance? Didn't Newman go to jail for using a post office truck to return empty bottles? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 18, 2007 Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 I really don't know the postman's name. However, you can't blame him only on this one. Mailed by someone 100 miles west of me and going to someone over 1,000 miles west of me. However, since the address didn't match up and the name was totally different you'd think he would not have stuck it in my mail box. But........ Some years ago we use to get dividend checks in the mail that belonged to the people with the same house number one block south from us. Every month, we would stick it back in the box the next morning. I know we did that for almost a year. You'd think the mail carrier would have got the hint that he was delivering that letter to the wrong address every month. But............I guess he liked repetition. Finally, I got tired of putting it back in the mail box for him to redeliver. I drove over to the correct address, rang the doorbell, handed the guy his dividend check and explained what had been going on to the correct addressee. I did that three more times, and after that never got another dividend check for the guy again. I think the addressee must have complained to the postal service. I also mailed a birthday card with a check in it to my son in law in the mid 90's who only lives 60 miles away. He never got the card or check, and the check never was cashed. No telling what happened to that one. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Do you recall that old college football chant that began: "Rip 'em up, tear 'em up.........."?? I sometimes think the Post Office abides by those words. One time years ago, I was returning a defective harmonica to the Hohner company. Packed in a small box. Got a notice to come pick up an item at the main P.O. It appeared that they had dropped that package on the floor, and had evidently run over it with some sort of vehicle....as there was a tire track on it. Naturally I had not insured the $10 harmonica, so, oh well...... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 I think Cliff went right over Norm's head....now here is your true rural delivery mailman...Crum Petree...who remembers him? As for Newman going to jail... Quote

1just4don Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Just a thought,,,is the zip code wrong or could be mistaken for yours??? More mail is misdirected because of un readable,,,or miswrote ZIP codes. I HAVE done it myself, not thinking,...Have got lots of mail with missed zips and the correct one had to be hand written in or stamped over. mail man does GOOD job here,,,rarely a mistake. Most mail is junk mail anyway, no harm,no foul. I think I even got mail addressed to a different town where I used to live once, delivered by name. (and NOT forwarded like for 6 months or a year like normal) IT was strange. Definition of a small town---dont need blinkers,,,everybody KNOWS where your going!!! heard of that letter that got mailed during WW2 that took till recently to get delivered. Must have found that one in the cracks somewhere. How would you like to have the job of dead letter office person??? They open the mail there to get a clue as to who it belongs to,,,if they cant, it stays there. My bet is more wrong, incorrect, incomplete addressing by sender than people THINK!!! Quote

The zip code was totally different from any in Wisconsin and the street address was also totally different from mine. It clearly said New Mexico and even had the 9 digit zip code on it. So......they could not have read it wrong (but I guess they did). There wasn't even a postmark on the envelope and the stamps were not canceled. They just screwed up. Quote
