Robert Horne Posted February 13, 2013 Author Report Posted February 13, 2013 The original temp gauge on the heater hose line is not very accurate, but only because the unit itself is not accurate. I put the end of the gauge in boiling water, and the needle would not go up as fas as it should... Quote
Robert Horne Posted February 26, 2013 Author Report Posted February 26, 2013 I was reading on a Ford forum, where guys are installing coolant filters on their trucks. Here is a couple of photos of a cut open filter to show what some of the filters catch... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 I believe Ford had some serious problems with their diesel engines and coolant..they did not use the recommend coolant as per the supplier..IH...but that was not due to non filter.. OTR rigs and larger farm equipment had these as stock for the most part..they were not carried forward/added to the light truck probably due to cost and added maintenance...not to say they are not needed..but the casting of the block is the same be it diesel or gasoline..so the filter makers are now trying to increase the market for their product....the water pump is the only item that is really protected as it can remove foriegn particulates..contaniminted water is still contaminated...just not loaded with grainular sand if filtered..the prime concern for the filter is due to the block still losing sand from casting long into its useful life.. Dave72dt Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Just a theory of mine but the particles also contributed to erosion of the cylinder walls, more commonly known as electrolisys (sp), known to exixt more predominantley in diesels. Since they aren't fired electrically, the static electricity in diesels attracts the granules and increases the erosion. Navistar told me that the detonation creates a vibration in the cylinder wall and the particles wear a hole in the walls. Could be the engineers theory at the time and i could easily be all wrong about it. Quote
Robert Horne Posted May 22, 2013 Author Report Posted May 22, 2013 Found another coolant filter on ebay. This one attaches to the radiator hose, 32mm or 38mm. Quote
