I've been searching through the archives and have not been able to find a satisfactory answer to my question.

I need a new gas/fuel cap for my 48 Desoto...and have found that a Stant 10623 is a direct replacement. Now is this stant cap vented or not? I see many members make references to getting a vented cap to solve fuel supply issues and such, but no one ever supplies a maker, or part number.

I don't want to waste my time, and money, getting the wrong cap.

Thank you for the help.

I did search the internet last night...and even read through the Stant website...I could not find refrence to it being vented or not. That is why I asked the question...not for a lack of trying on my part. Maybe just missed it.

So it appears that the Stant 10623 cap IS VENTED. I would assume then that any Stant cap listed for our cars would be vented as well.

Hope this info becomes useful to someone.

I have found that the shortest burst of descriptors bring back the answer on the internet real fast..anytime I find a link to a catalog/listing...I try to find the spec/description tab..often it is a small tab button...even at that, there are some things that give me the run around yet..

53/54 Plymouth is low mount and not vented through the cap..it is vented in another manner..the older models being mounted high on the fender allow for vented caps..

I bought this used gas cap locally a couple of years ago - bottom of photo ( a Wise-Lock 400)...Nice shape, with key and no problems using it.It's on my 48 Dodge.Cost was $10.00.At the current price of gasoline,I thought it might not be a bad idea. ;)

It's a used gas cap.The chrome finish shows a little wear up close, where the lock cover swings away.I believe they are fairly common and the asking price was $10.00.

That's a nice looking locking cap. Sure beats the ugly Stant locking cap. Is that a new cap, or a old stock one?

not sure where the ugly comes from in the link I posted for the stant cap (entry2) did you even look? it is not only the closest to repalcement in looks but the small warning label as seen comes off..and the price is right compared to NOS seller on some sites..now if your heart is dead set on a locking cap..yeah..the generic locking caps can be quite ugly..you can opt for a factory original electric gas cap if you wish..they were pretty slick...

Think you need to read a little more carefully there Tim...;) I was refering to the Stant 10491...Locking gas cap. As you can see in my post... I bold faced it so you wouldn't miss it. ;)

The 10623 looks very nice, and close to the original.

Here is a pic of the standard Stant 10623...

..I sometimes leave my Dodge out on the street unattended -also in the driveway,or at a motel overnight. The gas cap is out there in the open and usually the tank is better than half full.I'm not paranoid but stuff happens.I do have a gallon can of gas reserve in the trunk as well,if not for me then someone else stuck on the road.

As I mentioned the locking gas cap wasn't expensive,I bought it locally,it has a period look and at today's gas prices I bought one,(the stock gas cap is in the glove box).

If I come across another in similar condition and price,I'll pick it up. :)

And I Thank you Sir!!:D

I have looked at a few of those caps of E-bay...but most of the time they are heavily pitted. I too like the period look.
