48WingNut Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 It's easy for others to tell you to "bite the bullet". I guess it would depend on if you needed the money from it to help out financially. If you could afford not to sell it, try and find a place to store it until you can bring her home again. That way it would be out of sight from others. Just a thought. I have 3 projects of my own. I've said for years that one needed to go. I just can't part with any of them. Hope this helps. Quote
PatS.... Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 If you can, find a place to store it. It'll be out of the driveway. If you sell it, can you realize enough money to make a difference? Usually it's not enough to help. Concentrate on the situation at hand, and in time, you will be able to come back to the project. I put my project on "real slow" when my Mother passed last August. Now, I'm slowly getting back into it, and I'm glad I still have it. Takes my mind off of things for a while. But...in the end, you have to do what's right for you and not what others tell you is right for you. Good Luck Quote

Norm's Coupe Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Good advise from the others. I really haven't done much to my 48 coupe either the past couple of years because I just haven't felt like it. However, I have no plans to sell it. Another guy who lives close to me also has a 48 Plymouth coupe. His is in really bad shape. He never works on it. Said he's had it since he was a kid (over 30 or 35 years) and will not sell it. Sometimes you see it sitting next the driveway in the yard and sometimes it's in the garage. Right now it's sitting next to the driveway with at least one flat tire. Been like that for at least 6 months that I know of now. So, like the others said, if you think you'll want to work on it later, put it off to the side someplace. You can cover it with a cover or paint it with a brush and house paint if it looks bad. Keep in mind that if it's a real project truck you probably wouldn't get that much for it if you did sell it. That money would probably be gone in no time, so that amount probably wouldn't help that much even if you did need the money for medical expenses, etc. In the end though, you'll have to be the judge. All we can do is say what we might do. Who knows, if we were in the same boat we may change our stories too. Quote
Guest Dave Claussen Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 If you could find a spot where you could store it without having to pay monthly rent, (like a U-lock that is sometimes $50 or more), then it might be good medicine down the road when the time came that you could start back in on it. If you really deep down can't bring yourself to part with it, then don't. Find someone who'll store it for you. You might get the chance to return the favor someday. These old trucks are not getting any easier to find. More and more go to the crusher all the time. It's not an almost unlimited supply like the F**ds and Ch**ys. This all coming from someone who is possibly the worlds biggest packrat. i never throw anything away. I still have a leisure suit and wide white tie from the 70's in my closet. No, I don't wear them, but Goodwill would probably just throw them away. Quote

The only reason to keep it is if it a former family truck as your dads, uncles, etc. If it is just another 3/4 ton with a 116 wheel base send it off. You stated on earlier posts that you want to chop the top etc, but the 108 in wheelbase would make a neater street rod, just my opinion. You can always find a project. Dennis Sullivan Quote
makkelsay Posted May 15, 2007 Author Report Posted May 15, 2007 well the family issue is another problem i got it from a good friends family...it was my friends moms dads.... so i dont know if i could sell it because of that i really just wanna store it but im just weighing options i suppose Quote
Young Ed Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 If at all possible I'd try to keep it. I know I've posted pics of my dads 51 convert on the car side. When I was growing up he talked about getting rid of it and I talked him out of it. Its since been restored and is a best of show winner in the POC. Quote
Dennis_MN Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Had another thought while replacing the rubber gasket under the cowl vent. The time to take on serious restoration projects is when you're young and agile and not in need ot bifocals. I removed the two hinge bolts under the dash and had a heck of a time fitting in and then I needed two wrenches but my eyes wouldn't focus in on the exact location. Finally got the bottom freed and then had to remove the 4 bolts from the outside. Dang near wrenched my back when the little stool slipped when reaching for the two center bolts. Got in all removed and set the gasket in place. Closepin clamps worked wonderful for gluing it in place. I got mine from Roberts and it worked fine with a little streching and tugging. Then I put it all back together and noticed that the outside bolts could be adjusted a tad because it doesn't close quite tight enough. Danged if if going through that under dash process again. At least my memory still serves me for a day at a time. Dennis Quote
Dennis_MN Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 You mentioned short of funds as a reason to sell. When I started on my Model A restoration project, I opened up a special account at the bank.... called model A development or MAD money. Every time I traveled for the company I would squirrle away the extra money. For example I got .33 per mile but my out of pocket cost was only .10, I'd hide the difference away. When I had money in my account to buy paint or parts, I would, otherwise it waited. Never took any money out of the family account for my toy. The other dumb thing was every once in a while, my wife wanted to hire someone to do a chore such as stripping wall paper in the spare bedroom. I'd volunteer and told her that she could pay me the same rate that she pay someone else. It worked a couple of times and I don't ever recommend stripping wallpaper as a way to get money for a project vehicle. Dennis Quote
