Barsteel Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Hello! I'll soon be converting my '46 Dodge 1/2 ton to 12 volts...I want to keep the look as original as I can, so I will be using a generator. The truck is all original. Does anyone know what year/application Dodge 12V generator I can use that will bolt in? As far as the voltage regulator goes, do I use one that's from the same application as the generator? This is my first Dodge, and I've read up on the particulars, so I know that I'll have to change the positive ground, the lights, and use resistors for the fuel gauge and blower motor, but are there any other watch outs? Thanks... Chris Quote
greg g Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 amp gauge and coil wires. Any 56 and later Mopar style genny will work. Jerry Roberts Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Another way is to buy an alternator that is in a generator housing , or have an alternator put in your existing generator housing . One company that is advertising this product is Gener-Nator . I haven' t tried them . Quote
Scruffy49 Posted December 19, 2012 Report Posted December 19, 2012 Where are you located? There are forum members with spare parts available, one may be close enough to you to save you a bunch of money on shipping. And you can use the 12v regulator from Tractor Supply. Other options for 12v generators that are a direct swap? Small block Fords, Falcons and Mustangs had generators into the mid-60s. Look just like the Mopar ones from the mid-50s to 1960. And are a lot easier to find, new or used. Quote
