My name is ken, I am new to your forum but not new to D-24's. I have a1946 Dodge 2 door sedan, it was a barn find, stored in a machine shed from 1972 until I brought it back in 2005. I am getting close to done with restoring the car but I have some questions for you people, you are the experts since you are dealing with these cars at thispoint in time. My biggest question is, I have a low speed shutter or tremor, I have had the shutter since I first brought it back to life, even after I installed rings and bearings. I did the fuel tank pour 15 kit, carb kit, fuel pump, points, plugs, and condenser, cap, rotor, checked the wires and timed it. What could make it viberate, or shake at low speed? It feels like cross fire but smooth as silk under power or at higher speeds. Thanks Ken

Does this happen as you engage the clutch, or whan you are sitting still idling? It sounds like there is oil or grease on your clutch plate or possibly a loose motor mount. If it does it at idle, check your plug wiring sequence. Number one at 7:00 o'clock, 153624 going clockwise around the cap.

It happens while driving, as the engine rpm is low and goes away as the engine rpm goes up or under power, it feels like it goes away as the carb goes into main metering but I have gone through the carb, feels like wire or cap crossfire but that's all new. Good thought but I have fluid drive so it's not the clutch. I have been searching for a while.

Where are you located? Maybe there is another pair of eyes near you that can take a look. Loose rear motor mount? Grabby back brake? Bad u-joint? Neighbor's kid stuck in the front suspension?

Do fuild drives have a pilot bushing? A worn one could do this. At least with the ones with a torque type converter with a bushing In the the converter that can be worn out, A question as much as a solution.

A badly dragging ebrake? My 50 4dr. chatters badly when i forget the brake is on! Need to get a switch and light to remind me! All ready have worn out one lining.

Best of luck with your problem.

You have come to the right forum for answers.

Just keep posting your findings and questions!

Maybe the Engine mounts? I have the same issue with my Plymouth. It's intermittent, and I know they need to be replaced.

Since last fall I have come to the conclusion along with an old friend that is a Mopar lover that my shutter is the fluid coupler. Now it makes a funny noise too. I have found a 41 Chrysler with fluid drive and overdrive, I would like to use that coupler and the overdrive transmission, has anyone tried this? Will the coupler from the larger Chrysler six bolt up to my dodge 230?

When my motor mounts were shot, and my clutch was shot, I had clutch judder/shudder also.

It usually comes in at 15 or 20mph and goes back out at 30mph or sometimes come in at 25mph and goes back out at 35mph.

I tried everything to fix things and wouldn't admit it was the clutch until my neighbors dad John Bolton (77 yrs old) went for a test drive with me.

He was a mechanic back in the mid 1950's until 1980's. He said its clutch judder. He is from Michigan and they call it judder there instead of shudder.

Well I pulled my tranny and clutch and sure enough the clutch disk was wore slam out and oily film was in bell housing.

I ordered everything I needed from good old cheerful Andy Bernbaum himself and fixed it right pilot bushing and all.

No more trouble since, and that's been 5 years ago. Oh yeah while I was at it I changed out the rear motor mounts as well.
