Hello , I'm desperate , trying to aquire documentation explaining how to determine the year of manufacture of my (so called 1946 Plymouth) to the Cal.DMV They say they have to have this document along with doing a physical verification inspection of said 1946 Plymouth 6 pass coupe (Spcl-Delx) I only have a Bill of Sale stating year of car & release of interest & I have no title. Anybody out there have any Idea's ? Was it built in 45,46,47,or 48 ?

Her is an offical way to verify the car. Write to the Chrylser Historial division at Chrysler Headquarters. This will cost about $45 they will need a copy of the owners reg form and the serila number and a copy of the bill of sale if no reg form to prove you own the car.

They will send you the build sheet and other great documentation on the car.

I did this for my 39 Desoto and they even had the original build sheet with the official date that the car was built and also to which dealership it was deleivered to.

Best $45 that I ever spent.

Here is the address for Chrysler Historical:

Send a letter requesting your Build Record to:

Where is their web page: http://wpchryslermuseum.org/page.aspx?pid=400

Chrysler LLC

Corporate Historical Collection

12501 Chrysler Fwy.

CIMS 410-11-21

Detroit, MI 48288 USA

Attn: Historical Information

Be sure to include the VIN of the car in question and proof of ownership (a copy of the title, for example), a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check made payable to Chrysler LLC. If your build record is not on file, they will return your check. As of April 2002, the cost is $45 per VIN requested. (Note: The price may vary from $25 to $45 as of 2010; please check the Chrysler Historical website for current pricing.) In a week or so you will have a valuable piece of your car's documentation.

Well, to determine what year your car is - what is the serial number?

What kind of documentation is acceptable? The DMV should be able to answer that question. Can you use a NADA Used Car Guide from the era or a Branham edition? How about the Serial Number Guide published by Chrysler and Chrysler of Canada? If they do accept any of the above, does it need to the original copy or can a copy/scan suffice?

I'd go back and ask what an official document would entail for they're liking...they should be happy to tell you and I'm sure they've gone thru this before......gee, all this to get a tiny lil title there.... :D

...I had two folks at our dmv question the lil pink slip of my ex cali 70 cougar{came from bakersfield}...the 3rd person to walk up pointed out what I had already where the certificate of california was on it. Not too many folks around "here" show up with those I guess.

There is a number stamped into the frame on the drivers side, around

the rear axle area. You would have to wire brush the frame to be

able to read it. It would be the same as the number on the side of

the original engine......which many states used as the "v i n" or

serial number when these cars were new. This number will start

with "P15" for a 46-48 Plymouth.

Either the parts manual or the repair manual lists serial number runs made in

each year, as I recall.
