wayfarerstranger Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 GOT a new issue with my 49 ply w/ 54 ply. 230 it seems to be chokin down on me when i accelerate it sounds more like a jet taking off than a car , sounds like the carb is sucking air like if i was running it with out a breather . or maybe something is clogged up "exhaust ?" or like something is holding it back ? loosing power going up hill ? i haven`t had time to check anything out just thought id throw this out there , i`m thinking exhaust or maybe my trans or rear end is low on oil ?? DJ194950 Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 Running out of gas due to filter, pump, not breathing into the tank will make this sound. Even run out of gas with this car? If you let off the gas does it lighten up, go away? then you're on track. The other thing mentioned can also cause this, but not for an extending period of driving, except for plugged exhaust. Have someone rev motor for a minute or two and check the exhaust flow from the pipe. Best of luck, betting on fuel problems thou, Doug Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted August 27, 2012 Author Report Posted August 27, 2012 not running out of gas more like a struggling feeling if i press on the gas at about 30 its kinda like not going anywhere like bogging down it will still go as fast as u want to but i have to go easy until over 30 or so .. kinda hard to explain ? Don Coatney Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 I believe you need a sphincterotomy to help your rear end. Quote

wayfarerstranger Posted August 27, 2012 Author Report Posted August 27, 2012 i do remember you having a few here ! they went down a little dry too ! Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted August 29, 2012 Author Report Posted August 29, 2012 still not getting any where i worked on it today it starts right up and runs fine its just when i get going if i press the gas pedal down it just sets there i have to ease up till about 40 then it levels out ok .. feels like a automatic transmission low on fluid ?? i checked the trans fluid it could take a little but its not empty same with rear end it was low but not bone dry . could this still be in the tranny or clutch ? Niel Hoback Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 See if the spark advance weights are moving freely and also the vaccuum unit. If everything there is good, I would clean all the passages in the carb with compressed air. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted August 29, 2012 Author Report Posted August 29, 2012 u may be onto something with the vacuum advance ,i didn`t think about the V.A. because it is fairly new should have checked anyway . along with checking everything possible today like any mechanic would ?... i took the carb apart and cleaned all the mud out filter was full of dirt too, but didn`t change the way it ran .....i will go check the vacuum advance i just had a thought years ago i had a 49 Plymouth that had similar problem valve spring had broke ? Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted August 29, 2012 Author Report Posted August 29, 2012 Hey Niel , checked the vacuum advance it was bad so i changed it out , helped a lot but not 100% yet . engine runs great no shaking , stumbling or hesitation when i punch the gas at around 20 it just doesn`t take off like any normal car would ? it doesn`t seem to be starving for gas which makes me think the pump is ok , i don`t think it is the exhaust because if it were clogged i don`t think i could get going 60 mph ? everything on the engine has been replaced over the past few years so it`s not like i`m dealing with old old old parts ? if i press the gas pedal easy it moves on thru the gears and once i reach 40 seems to be ok unless i`m going up hill ... seems like to me if it were the plugs wouldn`t it be miss firing or something ? if the coil was bad seems like it would get hot and the car wouldn`t crank back up ? i checked & reset the points they didn`t looked burnt ,everything else seemed to be fine ? maybe i`ll just replace the points , condenser ,plugs , cap & reset timing anyway just to see what happens ? i have lots of extra parts here so i don`t have to buy anything just keep messing with it till i figure it out. BobT-47P15 Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 Could you have one brake that's locking up or dragging? I know, it sounds pretty farfetched....... At one time, the rear brake hose was collapsed on the inside on my car. After applying the brakes a few times, not all the fluid ran back to the reservoir, causing the rear brakes to not fully release. Hence, you were pullling against the brakes. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted August 29, 2012 Author Report Posted August 29, 2012 NO i have that problem on a 50 Dodge so i know what a dragging brake feels like ,, if i give it to much gas at low speeds it won`t take off / respond ? it doesn`t move forward feels like it is in neutral then if i let up a give it a little gas it responds ? Niel Hoback Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 Check the timing first, Chance, then spend money on parts. Quote
