dezeldoc Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 I found one while cleaning up, says Chrysler on the tag, has a round reservoir. any idea of the worth or if someone has a use for one. Quote
james49ply Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 sounds like the power steering set-up that chevrolet used in the 50's Quote
dezeldoc Posted August 24, 2012 Author Report Posted August 24, 2012 That is what i was thinking but this is Chrysler, a little different style than Chevy. Quote
48mirage Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 I'm thinking I saw something like that on a '53 DeSoto. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 I had that system on the 54 Plymouth Savoy owned a couple years ago. Not sure it's worth a whole lot, except to some Mopar owner needing one. Then, it might be a deal. I wondered if a person could take the complete system off a 54 (or other years that used it), and transplant it to something like my 47 Plymouth. Should look something like this........maybe not as greasy....... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 those early power steering systems can be a nightmare...I do not think it would be a fun time swapping one into another car.. Quote
captden29 Posted August 24, 2012 Report Posted August 24, 2012 i think power steering was first used on the 1951 chrysler. it is full time, so even in the middle spot of the steering wheel it is under pressure. this makes the steering feel very light and you must constantly be adjusting the wheel to keep straight. it is, however, a pleasure in parking lots and for turning. on my 1954 chrysler you can change a manual steer car to power steer very easy by adding the steering column with the power steer box, putting on the generator/pump unit, and adding the double pulley to the engine. the pitman arm connects with no mods, and the rest of the front end is the same. i would think that trying to add this to an earlier model such as a 1948 would require modification and may not work well in the end. could be worth a try if power steer is needed. i did that conversion on a 54 many years ago, only i took out the power and changed to manual. capt den Quote
